What are the advantages and disadvantages of dentures

Problems with any part of the body will cause us great pain. Once a problem occurs with the teeth, it will cause us great harm and even cause us to be unable to chew normally. If we do not deal with the teeth once they fall out, the surrounding teeth will become loose, which is particularly detrimental to the health of the oral cavity. Therefore, it is necessary to install dentures when necessary. Let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of dentures.

What are the pros and cons of dentures?

Dentures that repair missing teeth, also known as false teeth, are mainly divided into the following categories according to the fixing principles and production methods: fixed dentures, removable dentures, complete dentures, and dental implants, which have developed rapidly in recent years.

Fixed dentures are what people often call "fixed bridges". They mainly use the "pier connection" method to firmly bond the dentures to the natural teeth on both sides of the missing teeth. They are a non-removable restoration. Fixed dentures have better support, retention and stability functions, their volume is similar to that of original natural teeth, they feel comfortable without obvious foreign body sensation, have little obstruction to the functional activities of the tongue, do not affect the patient's pronunciation, and have a beautiful appearance. However, when preparing the abutment tooth, part of the tooth tissue needs to be removed.

A removable denture is a prosthesis that is placed on the missing area by a "saddle" method to replace natural teeth for chewing food. The patient can remove and put on the prosthesis by themselves. Removable dentures require less tooth tissue to be removed, are easy to adjust and repair, can be removed from the mouth for cleaning, are easy to keep hygienic, and are relatively inexpensive. However, it is large in size and has many parts. When you first wear it, you often feel like there is a foreign body in it. It sometimes affects the appearance and pronunciation, causes nausea, and has poor stability and chewing efficiency.

Complete dentures are retained by the close fit between the denture base and the mucosa and the adsorption force generated by the edge sealing and atmospheric pressure, and are adsorbed on the maxillary and mandibular alveolar ridges to restore the patient's facial shape and function. It is mainly suitable for elderly people who do not have any teeth in their mouths.

Dental implants are the process of implanting artificial tooth roots into the alveolar bone of the edentulous area to repair the missing teeth. Dental implants have better support, retention and stability functions, and can avoid or reduce the abutment tooth preparation required for fixed dentures and its possible adverse consequences. Since dental implants have no base or the base area is small, they are very comfortable. However, people with hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, acute or chronic hepatitis, nephritis, blood system diseases, people under the age of 16 whose alveolar ridge has not yet fully developed, or those with excessive bone tissue defects in the edentulous area that are not conducive to the retention of implant screws are not suitable for dental implants.

As a good restoration, dentures should be safe, firm, comfortable, and beautiful under normal circumstances, and should not be affected by chemical factors. When a patient loses teeth, he or she should go to a regular hospital for examination in time and choose dentures that suit him or her based on the doctor's advice.

The above is an introduction to the advantages and disadvantages of dentures. After understanding, we know that although installing dentures has many benefits for us, it also has disadvantages. We must make a choice based on its pros and cons as well as our own oral conditions. In addition, we must cherish our teeth in our daily lives.
