What are the symptoms of sequelae of encephalitis

The brain is one of the most important organs in the human body. If there is a problem with the brain, a series of diseases will occur. Headache and dizziness are mild symptoms, but severe ones will affect intelligence and make the person stupid and foolish. The sequelae of encephalitis will involve a series of related diseases. It seriously affects the patient's mental health and sleep quality, causing most people to be troubled. So what are the sequelae of encephalitis?

1. The sequelae period of encephalitis refers to those who have not recovered within 6 months after onset. The incidence of sequelae varies (7% to 20%), with aphasia, epilepsy, mental disorder, dementia, limb bending deformity, torsion spasm, etc. being the most common. Some may recover within months or years. There are relatively few people who do not recover and have lifelong sequelae, about 2% to 3%.

2. In the initial fever period, there is a sudden high fever (38-39°C), accompanied by headache, drowsiness, vomiting, and also nausea, chest tightness, dizziness, thirst, and irritability. The course of the disease is 3 to 4 days.

3. During the recovery period, patients may experience low fever, sweating, aphasia or language disorder, dysphagia, numbness and pain in the limbs, inability to move voluntarily, dementia, etc. Occasionally, there may be post-encephalitis syndrome such as tremor, limb contracture, torsion spasm and mental abnormality.

4. In the extreme stage, the patient has a high fever of over 40°C, convulsions, coma, limb spasms, disappearance of superficial reflexes, increased muscle tone, and visible signs of meningeal irritation and pyramidal tract signs. The course of the disease is about 4 to 10 days. In severe cases, death may occur due to respiratory or circulatory failure.

Japanese encephalitis (JE): It is transmitted by virus-carrying mosquitoes and is most likely to cause high fever, convulsions, and coma. The disease develops suddenly, progresses rapidly, and has high disability and mortality rates.

Due to the different types of viruses, the symptoms of encephalitis sequelae are also varied. The severity of viral encephalitis varies greatly. Some people have high fever that does not go away, while others only have low fever. There are usually varying degrees of headaches, vomiting, poor mental complexion, drowsiness and excessive sleep. In severe cases, symptoms may include convulsions, coma, limb paralysis, and irregular breathing rhythm.

The sequelae of viral encephalitis may cause epilepsy. Epilepsy, commonly known as epilepsy, is a brain dysfunction caused by sudden and brief excessive discharge of brain cells. The symptoms of sequelae of viral encephalitis manifest as different disorders of movement, sensation, consciousness, autonomic nervous system, and spirit, or they may all exist at the same time. Clinically, there is sudden loss of consciousness, sudden falls, convulsions of the limbs, foaming at the mouth, or strange noises. After waking up, the patient is like a normal person.

After reading the above introduction to the sequelae of encephalitis, I think everyone should have some understanding. When the disease is serious, it is very likely to cause amnesia and even behavior is out of one’s control. It’s scary to think about it. Therefore, we should discover it as early as possible and treat it as soon as possible to minimize the risk and reduce and avoid the occurrence of other diseases and complications.
