Are hangover remedies really that effective?

Nowadays, there are many advertisements for hangover remedies in pharmacies and on the Internet, claiming that taking some of these products can help you “drink a thousand cups without getting drunk” and allow you to “win over thousands of enemies” at the table. That is quite an exaggeration. So, do alcohol detoxifiers really work? Actually not. It is just a legend that alcohol detoxifiers can keep you from getting drunk. If you rely on alcohol detoxifiers and drink heavily, it is only a matter of time before you develop alcoholic liver disease. Next, let’s take a brief look at whether hangover remedies really work.

Are alcohol sobering drugs really useful? Can they really keep you from getting drunk? Be careful not to damage your liver

The instructions for use of some hangover remedies will include words like "This drug is very effective. Please drink two large glasses of water when taking it, and another glass before going to bed." This exposes the fact that the real effect of sobering up is fragile.

The reason is that the "miracle effects" of these drugs are no longer important. The key point is that you drink a lot of water, which, after being absorbed by the human body, expands the blood vessel capacity, thereby reducing the alcohol concentration in the blood and alleviating the symptoms of dry mouth and stomach discomfort after drunkenness to a certain extent. Some people also take stomach medicines such as Daxi before drinking, but they can only relieve the burning sensation of gastric mucosa caused by drinking.

Most of the drugs that are claimed to have the effect of sobering up only act as placebos. Alcohol detoxifiers contain mostly amino acids, vitamins and various active enzymes. At most, they can relieve headaches and nausea, but they will never increase your alcohol tolerance and allow you to drink a thousand cups without getting drunk. When you are drunk and confused, the best medicine is time. The body needs time to metabolize excess alcohol.

Hangover remedies have one thing in common, that is, they are not pharmaceutical drugs, but more of health products. Experts stressed that there is currently no real hangover remedy in medicine, and there is no news of any hangover remedy product that can prevent or block the side effects of alcohol entering the body.

Some people believe that these hangover products can break down alcohol and protect the liver from alcohol stimulation. But in fact, this is not the case. Alcohol needs a metabolic process in the human body, and it can cause damage to the liver. So in terms of actual effectiveness, alcohol detoxification drugs are unlikely to protect the liver. Instead, they will make drinkers relax their vigilance, thus delaying the treatment of the disease. Therefore, if you want to truly protect your liver, you should try to drink less or no alcohol.
