So, what are the side effects of oregano? Let’s learn about it together now.

What is Oregano

Oregano, also known as dysentery-stopping grass, wild osmanthus, and small-leaf mint, is a perennial herb of the genus Origanum in the family Lamiaceae. It is mainly distributed from the Mediterranean region to Central Asia, North Africa, North America and most parts of my country. It grows on hillsides, roadsides, bushes, grasslands and under forests at an altitude of 500-3600m.

Oregano's effects and functions

Oregano has the effects of clearing away heat and relieving exterior symptoms, regulating qi and eliminating dampness, inducing urination and reducing swelling. It is used to prevent influenza and treat jaundice, heatstroke, fever, vomiting, acute gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, etc. Its function of dispelling cold and relieving exterior symptoms is better than mint. The main effect seems to be on the digestive system, soothing the stomach, liver, and spleen. It can also be considered a general purifier and regulator because it can soothe nervous stomach abnormalities and intestinal spasms, inhibit acidity and bloating, and can stimulate the appetite and improve aerophagia.

People who are allergic to mint, thyme or basil are advised not to use oregano as they belong to the same family. If skin irritation, rash or dizziness and vomiting occur when adding them, they should stop using it immediately and seek medical treatment. Pregnant women should avoid using oregano because it may increase blood flow to the uterus, causing a worsening of the intrauterine environment and even endangering the fetus.
