How to treat thickened and yellow toenails?

The toenails become thicker and the color of the nail plate is not only not transparent, but also appears yellow, green, white, black, etc., covering up the natural pink color of the toenails themselves. This situation basically means that the toenails are infected with fungal infection, which is commonly known as onychomycosis. Because onychomycosis is contagious, it is very harmful to the individual and will also affect the entire family. So how to treat thickened and yellow toenails?

If you find that your toenails become thick and yellow, it is due to onychomycosis. The common treatment methods include scraping off the brittle diseased nails with a small sharp knife, or thinning and thickening the diseased nails, and then applying 10% iodine or 30% glacial acetic acid solution. You can also soak the diseased nails in 10% iodine or a special medicine for tinea pedis. After a few months of treatment, new nails will grow. To treat severe onychomycosis, griseofulvin must be taken orally for several months.

1. General treatment: Avoid scratching skin lesions on other parts of the body with your hands. Keep your fingers and toes clean to prevent infection. Improve your diet and daily life, and pay attention to mental conditioning.

2. Actively treat associated ringworm.

3. Treatment with antifungal (Daktarin) preparations.

4. Surgical treatment: remove the diseased nail and apply topical antifungal preparations.

Here are some common treatment methods:

Use 40% urea ointment. The formula of urea ointment is: 40 grams of urea, 20 grams of wool, 5 grams of white wax, and 100 grams of vaseline. This urea preparation is a strong keratinolytic agent. When using it, protect the skin around the diseased nail with gauze, fix it with tape, and then wrap it with gauze. Change the dressing once a day. Use a knife to separate the nail plate each time to separate the nail plate from the nail bed. Generally, the nail plate will soften and separate from the nail bed after 5 to 7 dressing changes. After separation, use small scissors to cut the nail plate into two halves, disinfect the area with iodine, and add a few drops of 1%~2% procaine solution. After a few minutes, remove the diseased nail and scrape off the uneven keratinized material on the nail bed. Then apply a mixed ointment of equal parts of urea ointment and compound benzoic acid ointment. Change the dressing once a day until the new nail grows out completely.

Take 20 cloves of garlic, remove the skin, chop or mash them, and put them in a wide-mouthed glass bottle with a stopper. Add 150 ml of 10% acetic acid (can also be replaced with edible vinegar), soak for one day, and then it can be used. Soak the diseased nail in warm water for 5 minutes to soften the nail, cut or scrape off the removable diseased nail with scissors, and insert the diseased nail into garlic extract for 15 minutes. Take it 3 times a day and you will see results in a week. If not cured, another course of treatment can be given according to the above method. To save time, you can also apply garlic extract on the diseased nails with cotton swabs. Soak or apply garlic extract. Sometimes the diseased nail will feel a little painful, but you should persist. This method is also effective if you have onychomycosis on your toenails. Garlic extract can be stored for a long time and used repeatedly. This method is also effective in treating tinea pedis.

The above is an introduction on how to treat thickened and yellow toenails. Here we would like to remind everyone that the main cause of onychomycosis is fungal infection, so we must pay more attention to the hygiene of our feet in daily life, keep our feet clean and dry, and pay attention to shoes with perforations when wearing shoes, so that the feet can have air circulation and avoid fungal infections.
