Which heart diseases are suitable for pacemakers

Among many diseases, only heart diseases can cause patients to become ill immediately. Currently, medical treatments for many heart diseases are very limited. However, pacemakers can solve some heart problems very well. For example, arrhythmia can be well solved if a pacemaker is installed. So which specific heart diseases are suitable for pacemaker implantation?

The main indications for pacemakers are sick sinus syndrome and atrioventricular block. Most often pacemakers are used by people whose slow heart rate causes them discomfort. When the heart stops beating for more than 3 seconds or the heart rate is often less than 40 beats, especially when the patient experiences blacking out or sudden fainting. This is the primary and initial area of treatment for pacemakers.

In addition, pacemakers can treat and prevent many diseases. For example, a heart attack can cause the heart muscle to be unable to contract strongly. A decrease in the heart's contractile function will cause insufficient blood pumping by the heart, resulting in various symptoms such as dizziness, chest tightness, and fatigue. For patients with congestive heart failure and severe hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy that are resistant to drug treatment, multiple pacing electrodes can be installed in various parts of the heart to synchronously generate multiple electrical stimulation commands to help the myocardium contract.

At the same time, some diseases can cause cardiac arrest or fatal malignant ventricular arrhythmias (such as rapid ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation). A pacemaker with defibrillator function can be installed to restore the regular beating of the heart. In addition, in the comprehensive treatment of certain heart diseases (carotid sinus hypersensitivity syndrome, vasovagal syncope, idiopathic QT prolongation syndrome, prevention of rapid atrial arrhythmias, etc.), pacemakers are still an indispensable or only treatment method.

Although patients with arrhythmia are suitable for pacemakers, some experts point out that not all patients with arrhythmia are suitable for installation, and it depends on the patient's condition. Moreover, installing a pacemaker is not a major surgery, so patients who need a pacemaker should not have too much psychological burden.
