Beware of the incoming smog! 7 ways to purify the air around you

Recently, many regions in my country have been hit by a new wave of smog, with severe smog occurring in some places. Faced with the frequent occurrence of smog weather, you may be powerless to change the atmospheric environment, but you can start from small things, purify the air around you and protect your body.

1. Filter the air

Air filtration is an effective way to reduce the impact of particles on the lungs, and it is always beneficial to use a recirculatory unit with a filter to filter the air. Changing the filter frequently also helps keep the air cleaner.

With the frequent occurrence of smog weather nowadays, choosing an air purifier is also a solution. Air conditioners with filters are more effective.

2. Close the windows

Ozone and other types of air pollution, as well as outdoor allergens and dust, can affect the lungs. This is especially true during the allergy-prone season. Be especially careful if the wind is howling or if you live in an area where dust tends to accumulate.

Keep windows closed on days when the air is highly polluted. You can also check the monitoring data online to understand the air quality. Keep in mind that you may need to open the windows while you're cleaning to clear the cleaning chemicals from the air.

3. Exercise, but not too much

If you have COPD, exercise is a good thing. However, if you are in a harsh environment, excessive exercise can cause breathing difficulties.

You need exercise, but you also don't have to walk up and down stairs with a heavy basket full of dirty clothes. If you do this, it could cause trouble.

4. Prevent mildew and mold

Good ventilation in bedrooms and bathrooms can reduce mold, which is also a cause of lung disease. Because dust mites also like moisture.

You want to keep the humidity in your room in a relatively low range, around 40%. To reduce humidity, consider using a dehumidifier and avoid using a humidifier or distiller.

5. Stay away from smokers

About 85% of COPD cases are caused by smoking. Regardless of whether you smoked before being diagnosed, you should stay away from secondhand smoke (or firsthand smoke).

Both smoking and passive smoking should be absolutely avoided. It's no secret that quitting smoking is not easy. But if you have COPD and still smoke, your risk is much greater. Only by quitting smoking can you avoid causing greater damage, otherwise the disease will develop faster.

6. Keep away dust mites

Like people, dust mites love to hide in mattresses and bedding. Dust mites can trigger asthma and should be avoided as much as possible by COPD patients.

It is recommended to use insect-proof mattresses and pillowcases, which are usually also mite-proof. Choose a foam latex pillow instead of goose down or feather pillows. Washing linens in hot water (above 180°F) at least once a week can also keep dust mites at bay.

7. Cut off chemicals

It seems like a dilemma: You want to remove dust and pet dander, but strong-smelling cleaners may become new allergens.

Entering a room that has just been cleaned can also cause problems, and wearing a mask may not be effective. This requires the use of vinegar or old-fashioned soap and water. The basic principle is to choose something without a fragrant smell. Also avoid hairspray, perfume, glue, paint, and air fresheners.

If you want fresh air, you have to clean it instead of covering it with another smell.
