Hazards of sulfur

Speaking of sulfur, many friends will think of the sulfur soap we usually use. Its anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects are very good, but I believe you must know that sulfur soap is not suitable for washing your face. This is mainly because sulfur is harmful to the human body. Nowadays, many manufacturers use sulfur to fumigate when producing cooked food, which can make the color of the food look better.

However, this practice is actually not scientific. Even food that has been fumigated with sulfur can cause serious harm to the human body if consumed. However, many friends have not realized this, so here I will introduce to you the dangers of sulfur.

Sulfur is harmful to both consumers and producers

Sulfur combines with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide, which turns into sulfurous acid when it comes into contact with water. When sulfurous acid enters food, it not only destroys vitamin B1 in the food, but also causes calcium to form insoluble substances, affecting the body's absorption of calcium. Free sulfurous acid can also irritate the human gastrointestinal tract. If industrial sulfur is used to fumigate food, more serious poisoning may occur after consumption.

Therefore, consumers should try not to buy and eat foods that look suspicious, or soak them in clean water several times before eating, which can reduce the residual amount of sulfites in the food.

Because processors are exposed to more sulfur, they are more likely to be poisoned and the poisoning will be more serious. In mild cases, symptoms include red eyes, eye pain, tearing, insomnia, etc. In severe cases, reflex glottal spasm may occur, manifested as decreased speaking ability, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, etc.

The sulfur fumigation method neither meets the processing safety requirements nor the hygiene and safety requirements of the food industry. However, there are indeed some sulfur-fumigated foods on the market that have both implementation standard numbers and health license numbers. It is difficult for consumers to distinguish them just from the appearance.

After knowing the hazards of sulfur, if you are afraid that the food you buy outside has been fumigated with sulfur, it is recommended that you make it yourself, and try to avoid choosing cooked food produced by small manufacturers. This way, you can avoid choosing food that has been fumigated with sulfur to a certain extent and avoid harm to your body.
