Seasonal rhinitis

Seasonal rhinitis

Everyone should know about rhinitis. Many people should have it. Normally, rhinitis does not have a big impact on us, but once it occurs, it will affect our lives. Symptoms of nasal congestion will appear, the nose will be itchy, and you will always want to sneeze. Sometimes your head will feel dizzy. This is seasonal rhinitis, which will occur in specific seasons and is very painful.

Seasonal rhinitis is a chronic disease. There are already many patients with this disease in my country. Once rhinitis occurs, it will recur every year, which will have a serious impact on our daily work and the quality of life. We must treat it as soon as possible.

Seasonal rhinitis symptoms

1. Nasal itching, sneezing, clear nasal discharge and nasal congestion are typical symptoms of seasonal rhinitis.

2. Seasonal rhinitis may also be accompanied by general discomfort, such as fatigue, heaviness in the head, etc.

3. Child patients may not describe their symptoms in such detail. Due to nasal congestion, they often involuntarily push up the tip of their nose with their palms to improve the nasal congestion. Over time, a horizontal line can be seen on the skin of the nasal dorsum. Due to nasal congestion, they need to breathe through their mouths, and after a long time, they may develop a "dementia"-like face. In addition, nasal congestion can cause obstruction of facial venous return, pigmentation of the skin of the lower eyelids on both sides, and formation of dark circles.

4. Mild nasal itching causes a crawling sensation in the nose. In severe cases, it is unbearable and the patient needs to rub the nose from time to time. There are continuous sneezes, often several or dozens of times in a row, accompanied by a large amount of clear nasal discharge. In severe cases, the patient has a runny nose all day long. Nasal congestion can be intermittent or continuous, unilateral or bilateral. Some patients experience decreased or absent sense of smell.

Susceptible population

The incidence of summer and autumn hay fever is mainly concentrated in young and middle-aged people, and most patients are concentrated in the age group of 25-54. Therefore, before the age of 34, the proportion of simple rhinitis in patients with summer and autumn hay fever is higher; after the age of 35, the proportion of asthma increases, but 18% of patients have their first attack of rhinitis and asthma in the same year. The age of first onset ranged from 2 to 68 years old, with the average first onset age of seasonal allergic rhinitis being 28 years old and the average first onset age of seasonal asthma being 33 years old. The average onset age of asthma was 5 years later than that of rhinitis. People aged 15-34 are at high risk of rhinitis caused by pollen in summer and autumn. The age group with a high incidence of asthma is 25-44 years old. The incidence of hay fever is relatively low in infants and the elderly. There were no cases of first-time seasonal rhinitis or asthma caused by pollen in children under 2 years old and people over 75 years old.

Asthma induced by pollen in summer and autumn often begins in mid-to-late August and lasts until early October. The main clinical symptoms are paroxysmal coughing, breath-holding, and wheezing, which worsen when going up and down stairs or when moving. Severe cases cannot lie flat to sleep at night and may even require emergency intravenous infusion of aminophylline or hormone treatment. Among the 1,120 patients with summer and autumn hay fever that we observed, 42% required oral antiasthmatic drugs, 42% had symptoms of being unable to lie flat at night, and 16% required emergency infusion treatment.

People with seasonal rhinitis do not need to worry too much. They should take precautions against the onset of this disease, insist on exercising, improve their own fitness, breathe more fresh air, wash their noses regularly, and get rid of some bad habits, such as picking their noses with their hands and cutting their nose hairs. They should also massage their noses properly to prevent the onset of rhinitis.
