Where is the colon

The colon is an important part of the body. It is connected to the rectum and is mainly distributed on the posterior wall of the abdomen. It is M-shaped and mainly connects the main parts of the intestines. It is a very important part. Moreover, we cannot do it after eating. It can easily lead to gastroenteritis or appendicitis. Therefore, it is recommended that you can understand the types of colon in us.

It continues to the cecum in the right iliac fossa and connects to the rectum at the level of the third sacral vertebra. The colon is divided into four parts: ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid colon. Most of it is fixed to the posterior abdominal wall. The arrangement of the colon resembles the English letter "M", surrounding the small intestine. The diameter of the colon decreases from 6 cm at its beginning to 2.5 cm at the end of the sigmoid colon, which is the narrowest part of the colon lumen.

(a) Ascending colon The ascending colon is located between the cecum and the right flexure of the colon. Its length varies depending on the position of the cecum. The posterior wall of the ascending colon is attached to the right kidney and the front of the psoas major muscle by connective tissue and has very little mobility.

(ii) Transverse colon The transverse colon starts from the right flexure of the colon, runs horizontally to the left, and ends at the left flexure of the colon. The transverse colon is connected to the posterior abdominal wall by the transverse colon mesentery and has a large range of motion. The middle part of the transverse colon hangs down to the umbilicus or below the umbilicus plane. The right colic flexure, also known as the hepatic flexure, is located below the right hepatic flexure and in front of the lower end of the right kidney. The left colic fiexure is also called the splenic flexure. Its position is higher than the right colic flexure and is closer to the spleen and tail of pancreas. Therefore, the left colic flexure is higher and deeper.

(iii) Descending colon The descending colon starts from the left flexure of the colon, goes down along the left kidney and the front of the psoas major muscle, and continues to the sigmoid colon at the left iliac crest.

(IV) Sigmoid colon The sigmoid colon starts at the level of the left iliac crest, turns into the pelvic cavity along the left iliac fossa, and curves in the shape of an "I" along its entire length, continuing to the rectum at the level of the third sacral vertebra. The sigmoid colon is connected to the pelvic side wall by the sigmoid mesentery and has a wide range of motion.
