The difference between uterine cancer and ovarian cancer

Uterine cancer and ovarian cancer are two different gynecological malignancies, with different locations, symptoms, diagnosis methods, and treatment methods. Understanding the difference between the two diseases can help with early detection and proper treatment, reducing the threat of the disease to health.

1Differences in the site of disease onset

Uterine cancer mainly occurs in the uterine cavity and cervix, and common types include endometrial cancer and cervical cancer. Ovarian cancer occurs in the ovaries of the female reproductive organs, and is often caused by abnormal proliferation of cells on the surface of the ovaries or other cells inside. Accurately identifying the site of the disease is very important for clarifying the diagnosis and treatment direction.

2 Differences in symptoms

Uterine cancer often presents with abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially postmenopausal bleeding, menstrual cycle disorders, or bleeding after sexual intercourse. In the late stage, pelvic pain or a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen may occur. The early symptoms of ovarian cancer are not obvious, and may only include abdominal distension, loss of appetite, or indigestion. This is one of the reasons why its diagnosis is difficult. In the middle and late stages, symptoms such as ascites and rapid weight loss may appear. The symptoms of uterine cancer are relatively direct, while the early stages of ovarian cancer are often more hidden.

3 Differences between high-risk factors

The occurrence of uterine cancer is closely related to excessive estrogen levels in the body. High-risk groups include obese postmenopausal women, patients with multiple miscarriages, and patients with diabetes. Ovarian cancer is mostly affected by genetic factors. Those with a family history of ovarian cancer and BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations are high-risk groups. Environmental factors such as a history of exposure to chemical dyes and a long-term high-fat diet are also triggers.

4 Differences in diagnostic methods

Common examination methods for uterine cancer include cervical smear examination, vaginal B-ultrasound and endometrial biopsy. Ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed through transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound examination, CA125 tumor marker detection and laparoscopy.

5 Differences in treatment methods

The treatment of uterine cancer is mainly surgical resection, and hysterectomy is often used for early cases. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are usually used for late-stage or postoperative adjuvant therapy. The treatment of ovarian cancer mainly relies on tumor cell reduction surgery plus chemotherapy, and the commonly used regimen includes carboplatin and paclitaxel combined chemotherapy. Some patients with advanced disease can try targeted drugs such as bevacizumab.

For women's health, it is very important to understand and distinguish the differences between uterine cancer and ovarian cancer. If abnormal symptoms occur, you should see a doctor as soon as possible for appropriate examinations. Early detection and early treatment will greatly improve the cure rate and survival rate. Paying attention to regular physical examinations and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help reduce the risk of these two diseases.
