How to clean your nostrils?

There are various problems in the human nostrils, such as dryness or itching in the nostrils, and diseases such as sinusitis and rhinitis. These diseases can cause patients to have many symptoms such as coughing. We must remind everyone that the skin inside the human nasal cavity is very tender, so it is easy to break. Therefore, you must be gentle when cleaning your nostrils, and you must master the correct method. If you don’t know how to clean your nostrils, let’s learn about it in detail below.

How to clean your nostrils?

Whether it is allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, or patients after endoscopic sinus surgery, nasal cleaning is currently an auxiliary treatment method highly recommended by rhinologists. So how do patients clean their nasal cavity at home? This is the correct way to operate the nasal cleaner introduced below.

1Nasal wash is as gentle as tears

Currently, hospitals provide professional nasal wash solutions to prevent patients from having trouble controlling the concentration when preparing their own solutions. The cleaning solution is warm salt water with the same concentration of physiological saline (0.9%) and body temperature (35~37℃) as human body, which is used to flush the nasal cavity, just like tears in the eyes. It will not cause discomfort, thus reducing the occurrence of choking.

2 Follow up, 7 steps to nasal cleaning

The nasal congestion port of the cleaning bottle is tilted upward, the bottle body is vertical, and the nasal congestion port is in the "0" closed position (there are 3 gears at the nasal congestion port. 0: closed; 1: small water output; 2: large water output). Use about 260ml of cleaning solution (i.e. 1 bottle of water) for one rinse;

Pull out the plug on the top cover of the cleaning bottle, hold the concave part of the bottle with one hand, and block the air inlet hole of the top cover with your index finger; (steps ①+②)

On the other hand, turn the nasal plug port to 1 or 2 in the direction of the arrow. The head should be above the washbasin, lowered and tilted forward 30 degrees, the spray head should be close to the nostrils, and the angle of the spray head should be slightly adjusted to avoid the flushing liquid rushing vertically up the nostrils as much as possible.

Open your mouth and breathe slowly and calmly through it. Tightly block the nostril to be flushed with the nasal plug port, block the air hole on the upper cover with the index finger, hold the bottle with your hand and squeeze the bottle body at the same time to start flushing the nasal cavity. The cleaning liquid will flow into the nasal cavity from one nostril, and after flushing the nasal cavity, it will flow out from the other nostril or mouth. (Step ③)

When the intensity of the water flow entering the nasal cavity becomes weaker, remove the index finger from the air inlet hole on the upper cover to breathe, relax the hand holding the bottle, and the bottle will return to its original position due to its elasticity, and then repeat the above steps to continue cleaning. (Step ④)

After rinsing, turn the cleaning bottle nose plug port to "0" (closed position) and put the upper cover plug back on the upper cover air inlet hole.

When rinsing again, unscrew the upper cover and pour about 260 ml of saline solution in the rehydration bottle into the cleaning bottle for use.

3 Pay attention to 5 things to ensure that you don’t choke on water

When flushing, do not use too much pressure or swallow or talk, so as not to cause choking and the sewage to squeeze into the Eustachian tube and cause middle ear infection;

In winter, pay attention to the temperature of the cleaning solution. The temperature of the flushing agent should not be too low or too high. If the ears feel stuffy or other discomfort during flushing, stop flushing and report to the doctor for timely treatment.

Patients with acute upper respiratory tract inflammation and acute middle ear infection should not be rinsed;

After flushing, the patient should lie flat for several minutes. Compound liquid paraffin nasal drops can be used to nourish the nasal mucosa, reduce nasal odor, and promote the recovery of nasal mucosa function.

After nasal irrigation, rinse the nasal irrigator with clean water and hang it to air dry for later use.
