The prognosis of patients with endometrial cancer is related to the stage of cancer at the time of diagnosis. Patients with endometrial cancer diagnosed at stage I have a 90% survival rate. Since the main symptom of endometrial cancer is irregular bleeding, which is easily noticed by women and attracts their attention to seek medical treatment, patients with endometrial cancer are generally in stage I when diagnosed. Obesity is a strong risk factor for endometrial cancer. Approximately 70% to 90% of patients with type I endometrial cancer (the most common type of endometrial cancer) are obese. However, little research has been conducted on the impact of obesity on endometrial cancer outcomes. Studies have shown that obesity before diagnosis is associated with a significant increase in endometrial cancer mortality. This may be related to the common comorbidities of obesity in women, such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, as these comorbidities may complicate cancer treatment. Obesity is associated with a higher rate of death from causes other than endometrial cancer but not with recurrence of endometrial cancer, according to a study using data from patients with early-stage endometrial cancer enrolled in a U.S. Cooperative Gynecologic Oncology Group clinical trial. Obese women tend to develop endometrial cancer that grows or spreads more slowly; however, some studies have found that obese women with endometrial cancer have lower overall survival rates, but other studies have not reached this conclusion. No studies have yet reported the role of diet and exercise in the prognosis of endometrial cancer. Although the impact of obesity on the prognosis of endometrial cancer is not fully understood, studies have shown that a higher body mass index (BMI) and a sedentary lifestyle are associated with a lower quality of life in women with endometrial cancer. Ovarian cancer Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancies in the United States. Because the symptoms of ovarian cancer are often non-specific, it is currently difficult to detect ovarian cancer early, resulting in most ovarian cancer patients being in the late stage when diagnosed, and their overall 10-year survival rate is only low. The impact of lifestyle factors on ovarian cancer prognosis remains largely unknown. To our knowledge, only three studies have evaluated the impact of dietary factors on ovarian cancer survival. All three studies were prospective follow-up studies of ovarian cancer cases who participated in case-control studies and evaluated the relationship between dietary intake before ovarian cancer diagnosis and ovarian cancer mortality outcomes. One of the studies, conducted in China and focusing on the effect of green tea consumption on ovarian cancer survival, found that greater and more frequent consumption of green tea after diagnosis was associated with better survival in ovarian cancer patients. Two other studies, one in Australia and one in the United States, suggest that dietary intake prior to ovarian cancer diagnosis may affect quality of life, and both tend to suggest that fruit and vegetable intake is associated with better survival in ovarian cancer patients. One study found that dairy intake was associated with lower survival, while the other found that only milk intake (but not total dairy intake) was negatively associated with survival. In addition, the Australian study showed that meat intake was associated with better survival, while the American study showed that meat intake was associated with lower survival. |
