How does diet affect the risk of prostate cancer?

Many diets are associated with the risk of prostate cancer. Some studies have shown that a high-fat diet can stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells; in particular, beef and high-fat foods are predisposing factors for prostate cancer. In contrast, a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the occurrence of prostate cancer. Such "healthy" foods include soy products (tofu and soy milk), tomatoes, green tea, red grapes, strawberries, cranberries, blueberries, peas, watermelon, rosemary, garlic and citrus. Soy products contain phytoestrogens, which are somewhat similar to female estrogen. The phytoestrogens contained in the right diet can reduce the risk of prostate cancer, while additional phytoestrogens have no such effect. Green tea contains antioxidants that can prevent cell changes and reduce cell damage, which may reduce the risk of cancer.

Vitamin E is a free radical scavenger that may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. However, if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood thinners, you should consult your doctor before taking vitamin E.

Long-term overeating can also increase the risk of prostate cancer. Vitamin D deficiency can also increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Foods high in fructose (a type of sugar) and selenium can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Lycopene (a carotenoid) can also reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Lycopene is found in high concentrations in tomatoes, and it is only effective when cooked (such as ketchup, not tomato juice). There are many studies underway at home and abroad on the relationship between diet and prostate cancer risk.
