There are actually many postures when we sleep, and side-lying is very common. So, for some patients with physical disabilities, they can also rest in the side-lying position in daily life. However, there are many requirements for how to perform the side-lying position. Generally speaking, the side-lying position is suitable for patients with paralysis or upper limb disability. When lying in the side-lying position, you need to pay attention to the following issues. The side-lying position is a natural resting position, suitable for anal examination, enema, postural drainage, etc. Generally, the left side decubitus position is adopted, with the patient's buttocks close to the bed, the left lower limb slightly flexed, and the right lower limb flexed 90° close to the abdominal wall. This position is suitable for female patients or those with poor physical fitness who cannot perform elbow-knee examination. It is also a commonly used position for rectal digital examination and colonoscopy. The patient lies on his side with his elbows bent, his lower legs slightly straight and his upper legs bent, one hand placed beside the pillow and the other hand placed on his chest. Soft pillows can be placed between the knees, on the chest, abdomen, and back to support the patient, stabilize the lying position, and make the patient comfortable. Precautions 1. Be sure to inform the patient of the purpose and importance of the position before the operation. 2. Inform the patient about body position and inform him/her promptly if he/she feels any discomfort. 3. Skin areas that are under pressure when lying on the side, such as the ears, shoulders, hips, sides of both knees, sides of both ankles and other bony protrusions, need to be assessed for pressure ulcer risk and provided with care. 4. When placing your upper limbs, avoid compression of the limbs and axillary nerves that may cause injury. 5. Place both upper limbs on adjustable arm supports with abduction not exceeding 90°. 6. When lying on your side, your shoulders and pelvis must remain in the same plane. 7. If the bed sheets are damp, they should be replaced immediately. |
