Long-term smoking can increase the incidence of laryngeal cancer

Smoking and laryngeal cancer are closely related. Most laryngeal cancer patients have a history of long-term heavy smoking. The incidence of laryngeal cancer is directly proportional to the amount of smoking and the total smoking time.

Statistics show that 75%-93.5% of patients with laryngeal precancerous lesions are smokers, and the vast majority of laryngeal cancer patients have a history of long-term, heavy smoking.

Under normal circumstances, there is a thin layer of mucus on the surface of the vocal cords to protect and lubricate the throat. When speaking, the mucosal epithelium of the vocal cords does not come into direct contact but only contacts through the mucus layer, so it is generally not easy to develop lesions. If you smoke for a long time, tobacco tar is produced after burning, and the benzopyrene in it has a carcinogenic effect, causing mucosal edema, congestion, epithelial hyperplasia and squamous metaplasia, stopping the movement of cilia, and thus causing cancer. Moreover, high-temperature smoke can quickly evaporate the mucus on the surface of the throat mucosa, so that when speaking, the mucosal epithelium of the vocal cords on both sides comes into direct contact, rubbing against each other, damaging the vocal cords and causing lesions. Therefore, smoking is very harmful to the throat, and precancerous lesions should be actively treated at an early stage, because the lesions in the early stage are reversible. If the patient is treated in time, the progression of the lesions may be blocked and the normal tissue structure may be restored.
