Solutions to pain in patients with bone cancer

Pain is a problem that almost all cancer patients have to face, but bone cancer pain is the most serious. Most bone cancer patients experience pain as the first symptom, especially in the middle and late stages, when the pain is often unbearable. Active treatment should be carried out when pain occurs, because enduring pain does not do any good to the body, and the correct approach is to immediately implement methods to relieve pain.

Clinically, the most basic method to relieve pain in bone cancer patients is drug therapy. Generally, non-narcotic analgesics are the first choice. If there is no effect, narcotic analgesics are used. However, the current situation is that narcotic analgesia is not widely used. This may be related to the doctor's medication habits. In addition, patients also have a sense of rejection of narcotic analgesics.

For bone cancer patients who use medication for pain relief, if they are eligible for radiotherapy, radiotherapy can be added. This is especially true for bone cancer patients whose pain is limited to one area. This mixed treatment can be tried.

For patients who do not respond well to drug treatment, nerve interruption can be considered. The method is to use drugs to directly paralyze the peripheral nerves that cause pain, that is, to insert an injection needle into the location where the nerves are concentrated, or to insert a thin catheter around the spinal cord.

However, no matter what method is used, pain relief is very necessary for bone cancer patients, especially those in the advanced stage, because at this time the starting point should be to improve the patient's quality of life.
