3 steps to self-examine for breast cancer

7-10 days after menstruation, the effect of estrogen in the body on the breasts is minimal. At this time, breast self-examination should be performed. If any abnormalities are found, go to a specialist hospital for further professional examination in time, which can help detect breast cancer at an early stage. Breast self-examination generally requires three steps, namely: observing the shape of the breasts; touching the breasts and armpits; squeezing the areola and nipple.

Step 1 - Observe the Breast Shape

Stand or sit in front of a mirror, and compare and observe the breasts on both sides facing the mirror to see if there is any asymmetry in size or shape, or any changes in contour. Pay attention to whether there is any bloody secretion from the nipples.

Step 2 - Touch the breasts and armpits

Lie flat on the bed, raise one upper arm above the head, place a small pillow or folded sheet or towel on the back, and touch the breasts on both sides with the palm of the fingers of the opposite hand. Put the fingers together and flatten them. Touch the breasts to see if they feel the same. If one side is abnormal, you can further compare it with the same part of the opposite side at the same time, paying special attention to the upper part of the breast to feel for lumps, glandular thickening or other abnormal changes. When checking, the movements should be gentle, and avoid heavy pressure or scratching.

Step 3 - Squeeze the areola and nipple

Squeeze the areola and nipple to observe whether there is abnormal fluid discharge, especially unilateral discharge, single-hole discharge, brown liquid or bloody discharge. If there are signs of these abnormalities, there may be lesions such as intraductal tumors, and you should seek medical attention immediately.
