Embryo transplantation requires holding urine slowly and drinking small amounts of water multiple times to allow the bladder to slowly fill up. This method allows you to hold urine for 3 to 4 hours, or even 4 to 5 hours without urinating, and you will not feel the urge to urinate. Generally, you can rest for about half an hour after the transplant before urinating. Some patients have an anterior uterus and are advised to drink 3 to 4 glasses of water so that the bladder is better filled and the uterus can be placed in a flat position, which is beneficial for transplantation. Some patients have a posterior uterus, so they should drink less water. It is recommended to drink 2 to 3 cups of water. In this way, during transplantation, the position of the uterus will often be relatively flat, which will make it easier for the doctor to see and increase the success rate of the operation.

Another point is, if you really need to urinate urgently, you can also tell the doctor that you can urinate some before the operation. It is not recommended that you drink a lot of water at the door of the operating room after the doctor starts the transplant. Because it takes some time for water to be discharged into the bladder after drinking it, if you drink a lot of water in a short period of time, the bladder will fill up quickly and you will feel a very obvious urgency to urinate, and may even cause lower abdominal pain, which is not conducive to the smooth progress of the transplant. Therefore, you should drink water a little earlier and more. It is okay if you lose some water during the transplant because it is too urgent.

Why do I need to hold my urine before embryo transfer?

There are two reasons.

1. Embryo transfer is the process of transplanting the embryo from the culture dish into the mother's uterine cavity through a transfer tube. The uterus is adjacent to the bladder. Under abdominal B-ultrasound, the endometrium appears grayish white, while the bladder filled with urine appears black. Holding urine makes it easier for doctors to check the position of the uterus during embryo transfer and to locate the embryo and transplant it to the most appropriate position.

2. The bladder holding urine presses the uterus backwards under the action of gravity, which can make the uterus in a more stretched state, making it easier for the transplant tube to enter the uterine cavity. A bladder that does not hold urine will appear grayish white under ultrasound, which will increase the difficulty of the doctor's transplant operation.
