What does cerebral palsy look like

Women will encounter various problems during childbirth. If you don't pay attention, it is easy to cause cerebral palsy in your baby. There are many reasons for cerebral palsy in babies. If a newborn suffers from cerebral palsy, it will not only affect the baby's daily life, but also bring a great economic burden to the family. In fact, children with cerebral palsy can usually be judged based on physical symptoms. What does cerebral palsy look like?

What does cerebral palsy look like?

1. Observe the posture: If a baby over 3 months old is placed in a supine position, he will lie naturally and constantly exercise against gravity, maintaining a certain position and posture freely.

If children with cerebral palsy with low muscle tone are placed in a supine position, their upper and lower limbs are often flexed and abducted, and they lack active movement.

Children with cerebral palsy who have high muscle tone often show abnormal asymmetric postures, few active movements, and stereotyped movements if placed in a supine position. The higher the muscle tone, the less active movement there is. The stronger the primitive reflex, the more severe the postural abnormality.

2. Touch: Mothers can feel the tension of the muscle tissue by touching the muscles of the baby's upper and lower limbs with their hands. If the muscle tone is normal, it will feel soft, firm and elastic to the touch.

If the hand feels soft and loose to the touch, and there is little resistance to finger pressure, it may be low muscle tone due to cerebral palsy. If the baby has strong resistance to pressure from fingers, it may be due to high muscle tone caused by cerebral palsy.

3. Passive exercise: Mothers can hold their babies and let them do passive flexion and extension exercises. If the baby is normal, he can both resist and coordinate during the exercise and has the ability to control himself within a certain range.

If mothers feel that their babies are heavy and defenseless, and have no self-control over their limbs, it may be a problem of low muscle tone due to cerebral palsy. On the contrary, if you can feel obvious resistance, and this resistance is often greater at the beginning of exercise than at the end of exercise, it may be that the muscle tone of cerebral palsy is high.

4. Holding: Mothers can get a preliminary understanding of their baby’s muscle tone when they hold their baby. Generally speaking, babies with cerebral palsy and low muscle tone will find it difficult to be picked up, have a sinking feeling, and easily slip out of their mother's arms, while babies with high muscle tone usually have a sense of rigidity and resistance.
