Can figs cause allergies?

Plants generally experience flowering and pollination before they can finally bear fruit, but figs are an exception. As the name suggests, figs can bear fruit on time even if they do not bloom. Figs are rich in nutrients. They can not only be eaten fresh, but also dried and soaked in water. They taste delicious and sweet, making them a fruit suitable for people of all ages. However, some people are allergic and worry that figs may cause allergies. So can figs cause human allergies?

1. Eating figs can cause allergies. Figs are rich in protein and various active factors. Most of the protein is plant protein, which is a foreign protein to the human body. A small amount of it lacks the corresponding decomposition enzyme in the human body, and after consumption, it will still exert the characteristics of protease and cause allergies.

2. Eating dried figs will not cause allergies. The main substance that causes fig allergies is the white juice secreted from the stalk when the fig is just picked. In addition to promoting the rapid coagulation and healing of the fig stalk repair window, this white juice is also highly irritating to human skin, and therefore has a strong allergic effect.

3. Local symptoms

Some people have a certain resistance to fig allergies, that is to say, the decomposition enzyme containing protease in figs is just that the mouth comes into contact with the fresh juice of figs when eaten raw, which causes local irritation, causing numbness or slight pain in the lips, tongue, oral mucosa, esophagus, etc., and in more severe cases, it can cause stomach pain.

4. Systemic symptoms

Some people have allergic constitutions and cannot eliminate and metabolize the active proteases in figs. In addition to the above local symptoms, eating figs may also cause systemic itching, wheals, and diarrhea. Dried flowers and fruits are dried, and the juice loses its allergenic activity, so consumption will not cause allergies.

5. Drink plenty of water for mild allergies

If the symptoms of fig allergy are not very serious, such as mild numbness, astringency and pain, no treatment is required. The symptoms will gradually disappear after eating porridge and drinking plenty of water for about two hours.

Seek medical attention immediately for severe allergies

If the symptoms are severe and systemic, you need to seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid swelling of the throat caused by allergies, which may lead to difficulty breathing and endanger your life in severe cases.
