【Introduction】

Other names of fennel: mountain coptis and wild fennel. It is the root or whole herb of the upright horned fennel plant of the poppy family. Resource distribution: Distributed in Northeast China, North China, Northwest China and Tibet. Indications: Clearing away heat and detoxifying; relieving cough and pain. It is used to treat cold and fever, cough, sore throat, liver heat and red eyes, hepatitis, cholecystitis, dysentery and joint pain.

【Morphological characteristics】

Annual herb, 15-30 cm tall. The root is cylindrical, 8-15 cm long, gradually narrowing downwards, with a few fine roots. The flower stems are numerous, cylindrical, and dichotomously branched. There are many basal leaves, which are oblanceolate in outline, 3-8 cm long, multi-pinnately lobed, with linear lobes and pointed tips; the petioles are thin and expanded into sheaths at the base; the stem leaves are the same as the basal leaves, but smaller. The dichotomous cymes are many-flowered; the bracts are subulate, 2-5 mm long. Sepals ovate, about 2 mm long, acuminate at apex, entire; petals light yellow, 1-1.2 cm long, glabrous, 2 outer ones obovate or nearly cuneate, wide at apex, 3 shallowly lobed, middle lobe triangular, about 2 mm long, 2 inner ones obtriangular, about 1 cm long, 3-lobed to above the middle, lateral lobes wider, about 5 mm long, slightly notched, middle lobe narrow, spoon-shaped, about 3 mm long, apex nearly rounded; 4 stamens, about 8 mm long, filaments broad linear, about 5 mm long, flat, widened in the lower half, anthers narrowly oblong, about 3 mm long; ovary narrowly cylindrical, about 1 cm long, about 0.5 mm thick, style about 1 mm long, stigma 2 deeply lobed, lobes thin, extending to both sides. The capsule is oblong, 4-6 cm long, 1-1.5 mm thick, erect, gradually pointed at the apex, slightly flattened on both sides, and splits into 2 lobes when mature. There are many seeds, which are nearly quadrangular and have cross-shaped protrusions on both sides. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to August.
