What's wrong with the pain on my face

Facial pain is extremely distressing. Although this symptom is generally not life-threatening, recurring episodes can be very torturous. There are many reasons for facial pain. Some are caused by local infection and inflammation, or external force injury, some are caused by food allergies, and some are caused by trigeminal neuralgia. Such patients often experience unbearable severe pain, and even feel pain when brushing their teeth.

1. Causes of facial pain

The causes of facial pain are complex, and the pain caused by each cause is not necessarily the same. Some are intermittent pains, while others are continuous pains. For example, trigeminal neuralgia, temporomandibular arthritis, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, etc. Toothache may be caused by problems in the oral cavity, such as tooth decay, periodontitis, gingival necrosis, etc.; external stimulation can cause facial pain, such as cosmetics, facial masks or drastic temperature changes; it may cause skin problems, such as peeling, sunburn, acne, etc.; migraine can also cause facial pain; headache leading to trigeminal nerve abnormalities is also one of the causes of facial pain.

What is facial neuralgia?

Facial neuralgia, also commonly known as "trigeminal neuralgia" or "face pain", is a type of paroxysmal severe neuralgia that occurs repeatedly in the distribution area of the trigeminal nerve in the face. Trigeminal neuralgia is one of the common diseases in neurosurgery and neurology. Most cases of trigeminal neuralgia occur on the right side more than on the left side. Patients with trigeminal neuralgia often dare not wipe their face, eat, or even swallow their saliva.

3. Manifestations of Facial Neuralgia

This disease is more common in middle-aged people over 40 years old, with women slightly more likely to be affected than men. Most patients present with recurrent, short-term pain on one side of the face. Each session can last from a few seconds to 1 to 2 minutes. The pain may feel like a knife cutting, electric shock, needle stabbing or tearing.

4. The harm of facial pain

Facial pain may be caused by various factors such as injury, inflammation, infection, etc., which may cause irritation of the trigeminal nerve and cause pain. Patients with facial pain must go to the hospital to check the cause, otherwise long-term pain may cause facial nerve disorders, such as stiff expression, slurred speech, etc.

5. Treatment of facial pain

First, we need to find out the cause of the disease, and then treat it symptomatically. For example, if it is due to oral problems, then you need to extract teeth and take anti-inflammatory measures. If it is due to external stimulation, you should use mild cosmetics and keep your face warm. If it is due to sunburn, scratches, etc., you need to use external cooling, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs.

6. Preventive measures for facial pain

Check your oral health regularly, keep your mouth clean, and treat oral diseases in a timely manner; pay attention to sun protection when ultraviolet rays are strong, use sunscreen and parasols, etc.; do an allergy test before using skin care products and cosmetics; do not squeeze pimples hard and damage your skin, wash your face with warm water, and do not use water that is too hot or too cold.
