Is frequent eye washing harmful to the eyes?

Cleaning the eyes is also very important, but most people usually clean their eyes, and few people clean their skin. In fact, we go to the hospital regularly to clean our eyes, which also helps to protect our eyes. When we go to the hospital to clean our eyes, we use saline solution, which is very clean and has a certain bactericidal effect. So, is it harmful to wash your eyes frequently?

How to wash eyes in hospital?

First, clean the skin around the eyes with saline solution, then turn over the customer's eyelids and drip professional eye drops to improve eyesight. The third step is to ask the customer to close their eyes and then massage their eyes. Usually there are three ways to wash: wash with open eyes, wash with closed eyes, and wash with squinted eyes. The whole process takes 30 to 40 minutes, and the fee ranges from a few dozen yuan to over a hundred yuan. There are generally no taboos after washing, and you can do some health exercises yourself: Roll your eyeballs: Before going to bed, after closing your eyes, you can consciously roll your eyeballs up, down, left or right dozens of times; Look into the distance: After work and study, often stand and look into the distance, look at more green plants, etc.; Diet adjustment: Eat more wolfberry, ginkgo and other foods that improve eyesight, especially need to quit smoking and drinking; Get enough sleep: Reduce staying up late, and maintain more than six or seven hours of sleep a day.

Eyewash washes away conjunctival secretions, which will be discharged even without eyewash. From how the eyes are washed in the above-mentioned hospitals, we can see that the functions of eyewash are fundamentally different. In fact, eyewashes all contain preservatives, and the representative preservative is boric acid.

Boric acid used as a preservative can destroy the mucin on the corneal surface, while polysorbate 80 used as a surfactant can reduce the activity of corneal and conjunctival cells. Therefore, long-term contact of the eyes with these two substances will inevitably be harmful to the health of the ocular surface.

Tears themselves are the best cleansing fluid because they can clean and protect the conjunctival sac. Every time you blink, a small amount of tears will be evenly spread on the surface of the eyeball to play a protective role. The tears that are secreted every second are renewed and can wash away dust through repeated coating, thereby cleaning the eye surface. The best way to improve dry eyes is to blink from time to time.
