What are the side effects of drinking paraquat and surviving?

People always face many unexpected situations in life. For example, in rural areas, since every household prepares some pesticides for pesticide production, there will always be some tragedies of accidental ingestion of pesticides. Among them, the most common example is paraquat poisoning. Paraquat is the most commonly used herbicide in agriculture and is highly toxic. So, what are the sequelae of surviving drinking paraquat? Let's take a look.

If the treatment is timely, there will be no left sequelae, including liver and kidney damage, and the survival time will not be much different from that of a normal person. However, damage to the digestive system may have already occurred, and digestive system symptoms may occur more than ten years later.

After drinking paraquat, apart from burns to the gastrointestinal mucosa, vital signs may be fine in the short term, but it can cause pulmonary fibrosis, for which there is no antidote.

Earlier statistics put the mortality rate at over 90%. Paraquat is a fast-acting herbicide that is quickly absorbed by the green tissue of plants, causing them to die. Once it came out, it quickly became one of the most widely used herbicides in the world due to its high efficiency and lack of environmental residues.

However, for the human body, paraquat is a deadly water for which there is no antidote. 10 ml can be fatal. If appropriate treatment measures are not taken in time, the average mortality rate according to previous statistics is generally above 90% (with the advancement of medicine, the mortality rate has declined today), and the death process is long and painful.

Damage to the oropharynx and esophagus of the poisoned person first appears slowly, and then one of the main target organs of poisoning damage is the lung, which also causes serious liver and kidney damage. In the early stages of paraquat poisoning, acute lung damage may occur, while in the late stages, alveolar and interstitial fibrosis may occur, which is called "paraquat lung". Most people die in the early stages due to acute lung damage, while the main cause of death in the late stages is pulmonary fibrosis.

Paraquat does not cause obvious damage to the central nervous system and the patient remains conscious throughout. In layman's terms, it is like suffocating to death slowly day by day while being conscious.
