Ingredients of antifreeze

We are all familiar with antifreeze. As the name suggests, it is a liquid that prevents freezing. Antifreeze is used in car engines. Everyone knows that the engine can easily freeze, which can affect the normal operation of the car, causing the car to be scrapped, and so on. In fact, antifreeze should be used all year round, not just in winter. Just like sun protection, it is a job that needs to be done all year round, not just in the summer. So what are the ingredients of antifreeze? Let’s take a look at it together!

The full name of antifreeze should be antifreeze coolant, which means coolant with antifreeze function. Antifreeze can prevent the coolant from freezing and bursting the radiator and damaging the engine cylinder block or cover when the car is parked in cold winter. Many people think that antifreeze is only used in winter, but in fact antifreeze should be used all year round.

1. Chemical composition : More than 95% of water-based antifreeze solutions at home and abroad use ethylene glycol. Compared with tap water, the most notable feature of ethylene glycol is its antifreeze function, while water cannot prevent freezing. Secondly, ethylene glycol has a high boiling point, low volatility, moderate viscosity and little change with temperature, and good thermal stability. Therefore, ethylene glycol antifreeze is an ideal coolant. 2. Types of antifreeze There are many types of automotive antifreeze, such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) in inorganic substances, methanol (CH3OH) in organic substances, ethanol (C2H5OH, commonly known as alcohol), ethylene glycol (C2H4 (OH) 2, commonly known as sweet alcohol), propylene glycol (C3H5 (OH) 3, commonly known as glycerin), lubricating oil, and common sugar and honey in our daily life. They can all be used as mother liquors of antifreeze. After adding an appropriate amount of pure soft water (water that does not contain or contains a small amount of calcium and magnesium ions, such as distilled water, uncontaminated rainwater, snow water, etc., and the total hardness component concentration of the water quality is between 0-30ppm), it can become antifreeze in the general sense. Since methanol and ethanol are more volatile, they are not suitable for use in vehicles in the northern region.

3. Functions of antifreeze In addition to antifreeze, antifreeze also has the following advantages: Anti-corrosion function: The engine and its cooling system are made of metal, including copper, iron, aluminum, steel and solder. These metals will corrode and rust over time when in contact with water at high temperatures. Antifreeze not only does not cause corrosion to the engine cooling system, but also has anti-corrosion and rust removal functions. 4. General Use: Used as coolant in cooling systems of automobiles, locomotives, tractors, ships, engines, water tanks and various mechanical equipment, diesel engines, gasoline engines, etc. It has multiple functions such as anti-freeze, anti-boiling, anti-corrosion and anti-scale. The boiling point of water is 100℃, and the boiling point of high-quality antifreeze coolant is usually 110℃ above zero. Therefore, when used in summer, antifreeze coolant is more difficult to boil than water. The biggest headache for drivers when using water as coolant is the scale problem. Scale adheres to the metal surface of the water tank and water jacket, making the heat dissipation effect increasingly worse and is also difficult to remove. High-quality antifreeze is made of distilled water and contains anti-scale additives. It not only does not form scale but also has a descaling function. Of course, if your water tank scale is very thick, it is best to clean it thoroughly with a tank cleaner before adding antifreeze. Like water, it has the advantages of large specific heat, high latent heat of evaporation and easy replenishment. When the ambient temperature is below zero degrees, the water in the cooling system will turn into ice, and the components of the cooling system will be in danger of expansion and cracking. At this time, the use of antifreeze can ensure that the engine works normally at low temperatures.
