I believe that most of us have been to the hospital for a check-up. Generally, when you go to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor will ask you to draw blood. When we draw blood, the nurse will bring a lot of blood collection tubes. These blood collection tubes are of different colors. So do you know what the different colors of blood collection tubes mean? The different colors of the caps on the blood collection tubes mean that different tests have been done on the blood in these blood collection tubes. Let me give you a detailed introduction below.

1. Ordinary serum tube with red cap, no additives in the blood collection tube, used for routine serum biochemistry, blood bank and serology related tests.

2. The rapid serum tube has an orange-red cap and contains a coagulant that can activate fibrinase, converting soluble fibrin into insoluble fibrin polymers, thereby forming a stable fibrin clot.

Rapid serum tubes can coagulate the collected blood within 5 minutes and are suitable for emergency serum serial tests.

3. The inert separation gel coagulant tube has a golden cap. Inert separation gel and coagulant are added to the blood collection tube. After the specimen is centrifuged, the inert separation gel can completely separate the liquid components (serum or plasma) and solid components (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, fibrin, etc.) in the blood and completely accumulate them in the center of the test tube to form a barrier. The specimen remains stable within 48 hours.

Procoagulants can quickly activate the coagulation mechanism and accelerate the coagulation process.

Suitable for emergency serum biochemical tests.

4. Heparin anticoagulant tube has a green cap and heparin is added to the blood collection tube. Heparin has a direct antithrombin effect and can prolong the coagulation time of the specimen.

It is suitable for red blood cell fragility test, blood gas analysis, hematocrit test, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and general biochemical determination, but not suitable for blood coagulation test.

Excessive heparin can cause aggregation of white blood cells and cannot be used for white blood cell counts. Because it can make the background of blood smears light blue after staining, it is not suitable for white blood cell classification.

5. The plasma separation tube has a light green cap. Adding lithium heparin anticoagulant into the inert separation tube can achieve the purpose of rapid separation of plasma. It is the best choice for electrolyte testing and can also be used for routine plasma biochemical tests and emergency plasma biochemical tests such as ICU. Plasma samples can be directly loaded onto the machine and remain stable for 48 hours under refrigeration.

6. EDTA anticoagulant tube purple cap, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, molecular weight 292) and its salt are an aminopolycarboxylic acid that can effectively chelate calcium ions in blood specimens, chelate calcium or remove calcium reaction sites, block and terminate endogenous or exogenous coagulation processes, and thus prevent blood specimens from coagulating.

It is suitable for general hematology tests, but not for coagulation tests and platelet function tests, nor for calcium ions.

Determination of potassium ion, sodium ion, iron ion, alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase and leucine aminopeptidase and PCR test.

7. The sodium citrate coagulation test tube has a light blue cap. Sodium citrate mainly acts as an anticoagulant by chelating with calcium ions in the blood sample.

Suitable for coagulation experiments, the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) recommends an anticoagulant concentration of 3.2% or 3.8% (equivalent to 0.109 mol/L or 0.129 mol/L), and a ratio of anticoagulant to blood of 1:9.

8. Sodium citrate erythrocyte sedimentation test tube with black cap. The sodium citrate concentration required for the erythrocyte sedimentation test is 3.2% (equivalent to 0.109 mol/L) and the ratio of anticoagulant to blood is 1:4.
