What to do if beans are infested with worms

The weather is hot in the summer and sometimes quite humid. If you keep some soybeans, mung beans, red beans, etc. at home, they are prone to get worms, which will affect the quality of the beans. When worms appear, it does not mean that such beans cannot be eaten. You just need to take certain methods to completely eliminate the worms before using them. For example, the blanching method and the sealing method are both good ways to remove worms. You can also put them in a sunny place to dry, which is also very effective.

What to do if beans are infested with worms

1. Scalding method. Boil a large iron pot of water, pour the beans into a mesh basket, put the basket into the boiling water, stir for half a minute to kill the bugs and eggs on the surface of the beans, then immediately pour into cold water, soak for a while, then take out, and expose the beans in the sun. After they are completely dry, put them into a jar and put a few cloves of garlic on the surface. The beans treated in this way have their germination ability and edible value unaffected, but their storage time is greatly extended.

2. Sealed method. Choose a suitable clay jar or large porcelain jar or other container according to the number of beans to be stored, then rinse and drain the container, and expose it to the sun for 3 to 4 hours. Then put the dried beans into the container while they are still hot. It is generally best to fill the container just enough. Cover it tightly and store it in a cool and dry place. This method can use high temperature to kill larvae and eggs, and can also use the respiration of beans to deplete the oxygen in the cylinder, creating an anaerobic environment, so that the adult insects that are not killed by high temperature will suffocate to death in the oxygen-deficient environment.

Tips to prevent beans from getting infested with insects

1. Just like exposing beans to the sun can kill bacteria, put the purchased beans in an open container and place it under the sun, giving the beans sufficient light exposure time, using sunlight to kill some bacteria and reduce the chance of beans getting infested with insects.

2. Put the beans into a container and scald them with boiling water for about half a minute to kill the insect pupae. But be careful not to take too long. Soak the blanched beans in cold water, spread them out to dry, and then store them in sealed containers.

3. You can wrap the beans in plastic bags and store them in the fresh-keeping area of the refrigerator. Low temperature can inhibit the respiration of the beans, keep the beans fresh, and kill some bacteria.
