What are the uses of benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is actually a strong oxidant. It is unstable and flammable, especially when it collides and is heated. It may even cause an explosion. It is often used in daily life to make analytical reagents, oxidants, bleaches, or plastic polymerization initiators. However, it should be noted that benzoyl peroxide can be said to be a relatively threatening thing and is prone to explosion.

1. Introduction

The molecular formula of benzoyl peroxide is C14H10O4, and the CAS number is 94-36-0. The full Chinese name is dibenzoyl peroxide, which is a white or light yellow incense stick with a slight smell of bitter almonds. It is a strong oxidant, extremely unstable and flammable. It can explode when hit, heated or rubbed. Combustion occurs when sulfuric acid is added. Main use: initiator for synthetic resin. Bleaching agent for flour, grease and wax, cosmetic additive, rubber vulcanizing agent. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach and preserve flour. Its safety has been evaluated. It also has a positive effect on the bleaching and preservation of flour. Some studies also believe that it has certain negative effects on the human body.

2. Main Application

1. Used as a monomer polymerization initiator for polyvinyl chloride, unsaturated polyesters, polyacrylates, etc. It can also be used as a cross-linking agent for polyethylene and a rubber vulcanizing agent.

2. Used as analytical reagent, oxidant, bleaching agent and plastic polymerization initiator

3. Used as a curing agent for unsaturated polyester resin

4. Benzoyl peroxide products produced in Japan, in addition to the 98.0% purity powder type, also have a variety of commercial specifications, such as paste type (50% of this product and 50% of plasticizer), liquid type (75% of this product and 25% of water), flour ripening and bleaching type (19% to 22% of this product is diluted with one or more of alum, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, carbonic acid or flour).

5. Wheat flour whitening agent; oxidant; bleaching agent.

3. Danger

This product is a strong oxidant, sensitive to impact and friction, and has a high risk of explosion. It should be avoided from contact with metal powder, activated carbon and reducing agents. Water must be used as a stabilizer during storage, with a water content of 30% and a storage temperature below 30°C. An explosion occurred at the Zhengzhou Food Additive Factory on June 26, 1993, killing 27 people and injuring 33. This product is toxic and may cause inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes. The oral LD50 for mice is 3.949 mg/kg.
