What causes tears in the eyes when exposed to wind?

Tearing eyes may be a problem with the tear glands, and tearing eyes when exposed to wind is also a common symptom. Many people want to know why tears come out of the eyes when exposed to wind. Tears caused by wind may be a problem with the tear gland secretion function. In addition to physiological reactions, it may also be caused by disease.

1. Some people are more sensitive to cold stimulation. When the eyes are stimulated by cold air, the lacrimal glands secrete more tears. In fact, this phenomenon is a protective physiological reaction of the lacrimal glands to cold stimulation, which belongs to functional wind-induced tearing syndrome.

2. There are also a few people who suffer from trachoma, chronic conjunctivitis, lacrimal duct inflammation (such as chronic dacryocystitis, etc.), and abnormal position of the lacrimal puncta, which can lead to narrowing or obstruction of the lacrimal duct, and thus hinder the discharge of tears. Therefore, although the symptoms of tearing (to be precise, it should be called "epileptic tears") will appear indoors, it will be more severe when encountering cold wind. For the former functional tearing in the wind, it can be treated with acupuncture, hot compress or Chinese medicine, and antibiotic eye drops, such as chloramphenicol eye drops, can also be used appropriately. For the latter eye disease caused by epiphora, you should go to the hospital for a detailed examination and timely treatment according to the doctor's advice.

3. Everyone has tear glands in their eyes, and the tear glands secrete to help keep the eyes moist. If the tear glands secrete too few tears, the eyes are more likely to develop certain diseases. Tears caused by exposure to wind are a stress secretion of the tear glands. However, this secretion is often in large amounts and will overflow from the eye sockets, resulting in obvious tears. Some patients often think that simply putting in eye drops will relieve the symptoms when their eyes are dry. However, blindly putting in eye drops can only have a temporary effect. Symptoms become more severe after stopping the use of eye drops. Long-term use of eye drops can be counterproductive.
