What causes blood on the stool surface

Blood in stool is quite common in clinical practice, but many people don’t quite understand why there is blood on the surface of stool. Generally speaking, blood on the surface of stool may be related to eating habits, such as getting a sore throat. It is also possible that it is caused by some diseases, such as hemorrhoids.

1. Hemorrhoids: Blood in the stool usually occurs during or after defecation, in the form of drops or sprays, the blood is bright red, and the blood does not mix with the stool. Hemorrhoids cause bleeding in the stool. When patients with hemorrhoids defecate, fresh blood is often mixed with feces. Sometimes it is accompanied by prolapse of hemorrhoids, forming edema, and pain may occur when incarcerated. Severe hemorrhoids may lead to anemia.

2. Anal fissure: Anal fissure causes blood in the stool, which is bright red. There will be blood stains after dripping or wiping with toilet paper, and there will be severe anal pain after defecation.

3. Rectal and colon polyps: bright red blood, painless, blood does not mix with stool. Stool bleeding caused by rectal polyps and sigmoid colon polyps. There is fresh blood or dark red blood on the stool after defecation, and rectal polyps are occasionally accompanied by polyp prolapse.

4. Ulcerative colitis: Bleeding is mixed with mucus or appears as bloody and purulent stools, accompanied by abdominal pain, fever, frequent bowel movements, etc.

5. Rectal cancer: The blood is bright red or dark red and is in the form of drops attached to the surface of the stool; in the late stage, there is often blood and pus in the stool accompanied by symptoms such as anorectal prolapse, weight loss, and changes in bowel habits. Bleeding in the stool caused by colon and rectal malignancy. The symptoms include mucus, pus and blood in the stool or dark red blood in the stool. In the late stage, the stool becomes swollen and has a foul odor.

6. Bacterial dysentery: The amount of blood in the stool is small, often mixed with feces, and is pus-blooded or pus-blooded mucous stool, bright red in color, with frequent bowel movements, a feeling of tenesmus and tenderness in the left lower abdomen, accompanied by abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
