Can quitting smoking help you gain weight?

Many people believe that quitting smoking can help them gain weight. In fact, there is no direct connection between quitting smoking and gaining weight. It is mainly because in the process of quitting smoking, some people will use food to reduce their desire to smoke, so they unknowingly consume calories and gain weight.

1. Some people say that smoking can help you lose weight, but your weight will increase very quickly after you quit smoking. There are also many people who dare not quit smoking for fear of gaining weight. People believe that the tar and nicotine in cigarettes help burn calories quickly, and quitting smoking will cause weight gain. In fact, this is a psychological effect. The reason why you gain weight after quitting smoking is that your appetite and sense of smell will return to normal, you will become interested in food, and your appetite will improve. Add to that the problem of habit, the body's metabolism slows down, and when there are no cigarettes to smoke, you will naturally look for snacks to replace them, which will inevitably lead to weight gain.

2. Many people gain weight after quitting smoking, but not everyone does, and this average weight gain of 3-4 kg is moderate. If this happens, quit smoking before losing weight. In addition to exercise, you should eat less fat-rich foods, control the intake of bright red pork, beef, lamb, etc., and appropriately switch to eating tender white meat such as chicken, duck, goose, rabbit and fish, or aquatic shellfish such as clams, oysters and crabs. Because light-colored and shellfish meats are low in fat, they can minimize the increase of human cholesterol.

3. Fruits and vegetables are essential when paired with meat, and it is best to eat more fruits and vegetables during the smoking cessation stage. First, they have low fat content and will not make you gain weight. Second, they can provide a healthy substitute in the process of quitting smoking. In addition to eating more fruits and vegetables, you should also drink more water and don't let your stomach be empty.

4. In fact, nutrition experts say that for some people, weight gain after quitting smoking is only temporary. When the body of the smoker adjusts to the change of quitting smoking, the weight will return to normal.
