Recovery period after clavicle fracture surgery

Recovery period after clavicle fracture surgery

Clavicle fracture caused by trauma is a very serious condition and must be treated with surgery in a timely manner because there are many lymph nodes and blood vessels in the clavicle. There is also a recovery period after surgery. During this period, you must eat more foods that can restore your body. You can choose high-calcium, high-protein, and high-vitamin foods to supplement your nutrition. During the recovery period, you must pay attention to getting more rest and exercising moderately.

Traumatic injuries to the clavicle occur. Common injuries include falling onto the ground with the shoulder joint behind, causing a clavicle fracture. Other injuries such as direct violence and combined injuries from car accidents can also be seen.

At this point, most people think that the pain after a fracture is unbearable and will ask for hospitalization and surgery as soon as possible.

In fact, at this point, most clavicle fractures do not require surgical incision. The reason why the surgical rate is so high now is due to the current medical environment.

According to medical books, clavicle fractures are only absolutely indicated for surgery when they are open fractures or when the fracture causes neurovascular damage. However, this is difficult to achieve in clinical practice. Because if a patient comes to see a doctor with a fractured clavicle, the doctor will tell the patient to just go home and put on a suspension brake after looking at the X-ray. Patients will have many questions. I have a broken bone. Do I not need surgery? The X-ray shows that the fracture is dislocated. Doesn’t it need to be reduced? Is this doctor competent? This series of questions actually leads the doctor to choose open reduction and internal fixation surgery. This puts the patient at ease and the doctor also increases the hospital’s income. It's definitely a win-win situation.

But is there any difference in the recovery effects between patients who undergo surgery and those who do not? According to a large amount of statistics from abroad, there is no significant difference in the long-term effects. What I mean here is that as long as the clavicle fracture is not an open fracture and there is no neurovascular damage, more than 90% of patients do only need suspension immobilization, which can be done with a triangular bandage, clavicle strap, etc. Generally, after about a month, when bone callus forms at the fracture end, the pain will not be obvious, and the patient can resume normal life in 3-6 months. But there is a prerequisite, which is that you have to endure shoulder joint immobilization for about 1 month. In fact, even surgery requires braking.
