What foods should not be eaten if you have hydronephrosis?

Patients with hydronephrosis need to pay attention to certain dietary taboos. In their daily diet, they should try to avoid foods high in sodium, such as salted egg ham burgers, etc., and foods high in oxalic acid, such as spinach, peppers, potatoes, and green peppers.

1. Avoid high-sodium foods

Patients with hydronephrosis should eat a low-salt diet and avoid foods high in sodium, such as salted eggs, ham, hamburgers, French fries, bacon, sausages, salted fish, dried tofu, pickles, etc.; these foods can easily lead to water and sodium retention and aggravate hydronephrosis. Eating appropriate amounts of foods such as white radish and honey can help clear waterways.

2. Avoid foods high in oxalate

The main component of urinary stones is calcium oxalate. Patients with hydronephrosis caused by urinary stones should avoid foods with high oxalate content, including: spinach, amaranth, peppers, potatoes, green garlic, onions, wild rice stems, various bamboo shoots, cocoa, black tea, tea leaves, nuts, oranges, etc.

3. Avoid foods high in purine

Patients with hydronephrosis should eat less foods high in purine, such as animal offal, stuffing, sardines, fish roe, shiitake mushrooms, seaweed, etc. Eat less high-protein foods to avoid increasing the burden on your kidneys. Eat less or no high-uric acid foods such as animal liver, brain, and kidney; avoid eating beans and their products (such as tofu, bean sprouts, soy flour, etc.) because they are rich in protein and can easily cause stones, leading to a slow healing process.

4. Avoid spicy food

Patients with hydronephrosis should avoid spicy, fried, pickled, and fishy foods, such as seafood, crabs, shrimps, geese, bamboo shoots, roosters, pork heads, hairtail, yellow croaker, etc. Avoid fried or grilled foods, and quit smoking and drinking. These foods can easily induce or aggravate the condition.
