Why do teeth turn yellow

Why do teeth turn yellow

Yellowing of teeth can make many people feel inferior. In fact, yellowing of teeth is caused by physiological reasons. For example, as you age, your teeth may lose their original whiteness. It may also be caused by habits such as smoking and drinking coffee frequently.

1. Physiological tooth color changes:

As people age and use their teeth over a long period of time, their teeth will gradually change slightly in color. Just like your own skin, it is white and smooth when you are young, but gradually becomes dull as you get older. These are all unavoidable. Don’t worry too much about such color changes. If you are very concerned about your appearance, you can use teeth whitening methods to improve your appearance, just like skin care.

2. Exogenous yellow teeth:

Because food pigments stick to the tooth surface, they appear yellow or gray; the soot from smoking, pigments from beverages, coffee, tea, etc.

3. Endogenous yellow teeth:

Teeth are affected by certain elements, and the pigment is not on the surface of the teeth but in the tooth tissue. There are two main types: fluorosis and tetracycline. Dental fluorosis is caused by living in areas with high fluoride content in drinking water before the age of seven. The pigment is in the enamel on the surface of the teeth and appears as yellow-brown patches. In severe cases, there are uneven defects on the surface of the teeth, which are usually most obvious on the maxillary incisors, thus seriously affecting the appearance. Tetracycline teeth are caused by taking tetracycline drugs before the age of eight. Tetracycline molecules can combine with calcium in the tooth tissue to form a very stable complex, which is deposited in the tooth tissue and discolors the teeth. All the teeth in the mouth may appear brown-gray or brown-yellow.
