Analysis of the harm of blue light to human body

Did you know? Among the 500 million Internet users in my country, 63.5% of them suffer from varying degrees of eye diseases such as decreased vision, cataracts, and blindness due to blue light and radiation. The potential threat of blue light is very large. I was shocked when I first saw this data. I had no idea what blue light was. Is it blue light? I naively thought at that time, do you know what it is? So, let me introduce to you what blue light is and the harm it does to the human body. Let’s take a look.

What is Blue Light

The so-called blue light is light with relatively high energy and a wavelength between 400nm-480nm. It exists in large quantities in computer monitors, fluorescent lamps, mobile phones, digital products, displays, LEDs, etc. The blue light within this wavelength will increase the amount of toxins in the macular area of the eye, seriously threatening our fundus health.

What are the specific hazards of blue light?

1. Blue light will aggravate retinal macular diseases

As we age, lipofuscin (cell debris) left behind by phagocytosis of retinal pigment epithelial cells will gradually accumulate in the retinal pigment epithelial cell layer, making the retina more sensitive to chronic light damage. Blue light will exacerbate macular problems caused by genetics, nutrition, environment, health habits and age-related causes. After prolonged exposure, retinal toxicity increases as the wavelength shortens, exacerbating macular disease.

2. Blue light can cause fundus damage after cataract surgery

As we age, our lens becomes more yellow. This helps filter out blue light. However, after cataract surgery, patients lose these natural barriers. Blue light will reach the retina directly, thereby damaging the retinal pigment epithelial cells and seriously affecting the health of the fundus.

3. Blue light can cause blurred vision, visual fatigue, and VDT syndrome

After the blue light enters the fundus and is focused, the focus does not fall on the retina, but between the retina and the lens. This increases the chromatic aberration distance at which light is focused in the eye. The distance between the focal points in the eye is the main reason for blurred vision, so the entry of blue light will aggravate the color difference and blurred vision. At that time, the eye muscles will be over-tense, the blood supply to the eyes will be over-tense, and the blood supply to the eyes will be enhanced, thereby aggravating fatigue.

4. Blue light can cause glare

Blue light has higher energy between 400nm-500nm. Light with higher energy is more likely to be scattered when it encounters tiny particles in the air, and blue light becomes the main cause of glare.

I believe that through the above introduction everyone has understood blue light and the harm of blue light to the human body, and also knows to prevent blue light. In fact, if you want to prevent the harm of blue light, the most important thing is to avoid the human eye from looking directly at the surface of the light source for a long time. For infants and the elderly at home who have weak protection awareness, measures should be taken to prevent the light source from directly hitting the eyes. Everyone must remember to protect their eyes.
