What is the use of Band-Aid

Bumps and stumbles are inevitable in life, and injuries are also unavoidable. Everyone is familiar with Band-Aids, and I believe everyone has used them. There are all kinds of Band-Aids in pharmacies now, and their effects vary, but the thing they have in common is that they are all used to bandage wounds. But you may not know why it can really heal wounds, when to use it and when not to use it, and what to pay attention to before use. In order to avoid serious consequences caused by incorrect use, the following introduces how to use Band-Aids.

Band-Aids are an emergency item that is commonly found in households. They can apply pressure to stop bleeding and prevent contamination for some minor skin injuries. Some people believe that Band-Aids can reduce inflammation and stop bleeding, and they apply them to any type of injury. This is wrong. Band-Aids are mainly used for temporary bandaging and hemostasis after minor trauma, and it is necessary to ensure that the wound is not seriously contaminated, otherwise it will be counterproductive. Therefore, when using Band-Aids, you should pay attention to the following points:

1. Those with severe trauma or contaminated wounds should go to the hospital for treatment. Do not use Band-Aids before debridement.

2. Use a Band-Aid until the bleeding stops or after 2 to 3 hours, then switch to gauze.

3. Even if the wound is bandaged with a Band-Aid, it should not come into contact with water and should be kept dry to prevent infection.

4. Do not use Band-Aids if the wound is festering or eroded.

5. If the skin is slightly abraded and there is only a small amount of bleeding, there is no need to use a Band-Aid.

6. Band-Aids are sterile products. After opening the package, do not touch the inner layer of hemostatic gauze with your hands.

Due to the limitations of the structure of Band-Aids, they can generally only be used on relatively superficial wounds that are neat and clean, do not bleed much, and do not require sutures. They can thus temporarily stop bleeding and protect the wound surface. But it should be noted that the use time should not be too long.

It is common to see people putting Band-Aids directly on wounds, which is absolutely incorrect and can easily lead to wound infection! Cleaning the wound first is an essential step before using a Band-Aid. When doing outdoor sports, the sanitary conditions are poor and the chance of injury is greater, so you should pay more attention to this.

In addition, if the Band-Aid on the wound becomes wet, it should be replaced immediately. This is especially important when you are outdoors because Band-Aids have good absorption capacity. If left untreated, the wound will be directly soaked in water, which will become a breeding ground for bacteria. Now, although there is a kind of waterproof Band-Aid on the market, the effect is not obvious, especially when it is applied to the hand joints which are most vulnerable to injury during outdoor activities, the waterproof performance is not reflected at all.

The above is an introduction to the uses of Band-Aids. Although Band-Aids can heal wounds, they are not omnipotent. They are only limited to some very small wounds. If sutures are really needed, you must go to the hospital for treatment immediately. Before use, make sure that the Band-Aid and the wound are clean and free of bacteria, otherwise the wound will easily become infected in the absence of ventilation.
