Ten tips to pick out thin-skinned and sweet watermelons

Ten tips to pick out thin-skinned and sweet watermelons

In summer, watermelon is people's first choice of delicious health-preserving fruit. It can relieve heat and thirst, and help lose weight. Watermelon has many functions. However, people are most afraid of accidentally picking a bad watermelon. How can we choose watermelons more reliably? Let's take a look with the editor below.

1. Observe the colors and listen to the sounds

A melon with a smooth surface, clear patterns and distinct lines, and a yellow bottom is a ripe melon; a melon with a fuzzy surface, dull luster, unclear patterns and lines is an unripe melon; a melon with a "bang bang" sound heard when you tap it with your fingers is ripe; a melon with a "dang dang" sound heard is not yet ripe, and a melon with a "puff" sound heard is overripe.

2. Look at the handle

The green ones are ripe melons; the ones that are dark brown, have fallen fuzz, are bent and brittle, and have yellow and withered tips are melons that were picked before they are ripe; the ones with dried stems are "dead vine melons" and are of poor quality.

3. Look at the beginning and the end

A good melon is one with symmetrical ends, deep depressions at the navel and stem, and fullness all around. A melon with a big head and a small tail, or a pointed head and a thick tail, is of poor quality.

4. Specific elasticity

If the melon skin is thin and breaks easily when pressed with fingers, it is a ripe melon; if it cracks when scratched with fingernails and the melon is soft, it is overripe.

5. Weigh it with your hands

The melon that feels like it floats in the air is ripe, while the melon that feels like it sinks is raw.

6. Test specific gravity

If you throw a melon into water, the one that floats up is a ripe melon; if you throw a melon into water, the one that sinks is an unripe melon.

7. Look at the size

Within the same variety, bigger is better than smaller. There is a certain correlation between the size and maturity of watermelon. The huge watermelons are not the first to ripen, but they are definitely not the last to ripen. They are usually in the middle of the ripening period of watermelons. Therefore, before most watermelons are on the market, you should buy small or medium-sized watermelons, which have a greater probability of ripening, while large watermelons have a lower probability of ripening. By the same token, when watermelons are on the market in large quantities, it is no longer appropriate to buy small watermelons, but large ones should be bought. Small watermelons may be rotten vines of early-maturing varieties (early-planted watermelons).

8. Look at the shape

The melons with neat and symmetrical bodies have normal growth and good quality; the melons with deformed bodies have abnormal growth and poor quality.

9. Look at the melon rind

Jingxin No. 1, the dark green mesh stripes on the light green skin and the nearly spherical shape are its hallmarks. There is also the black beauty, a watermelon with a dark green color and a slim figure, which is also a selection mark. In addition, the popular varieties on the market include Chun Hongyu, Jin Xiaofeng and other unique watermelon varieties.

It should be noted that the quality of a watermelon is fundamentally determined by genes, and the varieties mentioned above are selected through long-term cultivation by horticulturists. From the germination of their seeds, they have a higher chance of producing watermelons with higher sugar content and more water.

10. Plant observation method

If you look up and down at the vine where the watermelon stem is located and it is naturally dry, it means that the growth of the watermelon has naturally ended and the watermelon is ripe.
