Can prostate cancer be treated? How long can one live?

Prostate cancer can be treated with surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, etc. The patient's survival depends on the stage of cancer, treatment method and individual differences. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve the survival rate. Treatment methods include radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy, etc. Hormone therapy is often used for advanced patients.

1. Radical prostatectomy is the main treatment for early prostate cancer. It involves surgical removal of the entire prostate and surrounding tissues. It is suitable for cancers confined to the prostate. PSA levels must be checked regularly after surgery.

2. External beam radiotherapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It is suitable for patients with locally advanced disease or those who are unable to undergo surgery. The treatment cycle is usually 5-7 weeks. Side effects include frequent urination, diarrhea, etc.

3. Brachytherapy implants radioactive particles into the prostate to directly kill cancer cells. It is suitable for low to medium risk patients. The advantages are short treatment time and mild side effects.

4. Hormone therapy inhibits the growth of cancer cells by reducing the level of androgen in the body. It is often used for advanced or metastatic prostate cancer, including medical castration and surgical castration. It requires long-term medication and monitoring of side effects.

5. Chemotherapy is used for advanced patients who are not responsive to hormone therapy. Commonly used drugs include docetaxel, cabazitaxel, etc., which can prolong survival, but have significant side effects and must be performed under the guidance of a doctor.

The survival period of prostate cancer is closely related to the cancer stage. The 5-year survival rate of early-stage patients is close to 100%, while the survival period of late-stage patients is shorter, but it can still be prolonged through comprehensive treatment. Regular physical examinations and early screening are the key to improving the survival rate. It is recommended that men over 50 years old undergo PSA testing every year, and those with a family history should start screening earlier.
