How is tongue cancer diagnosed?

Tongue cancer is the most common oral cancer. It is generally highly malignant, grows quickly, and makes speaking, eating, and swallowing difficult.

How is tongue cancer diagnosed?

1. The cancer occurs in the middle 1/3 of the lateral edge of the tongue, manifesting as ulcers or infiltrates.

2. There are often chronic irritation factors in the corresponding area of ​​the cancer, such as residual roots, residual crowns or poor restorations; there may also be precancerous lesions such as white spots.

3. The pain is obvious and may radiate to the ear, temporal area and half of the head and face.

4. When the cancer infiltrates into the lingual nerve and hypoglossal nerve, there may be tongue numbness and tongue movement disorders, and difficulties in speaking, eating and swallowing.

5. Cancer lesions metastasize more frequently and earlier through lymph nodes, most commonly to the deep cervical lymph nodes; distant metastasis may also occur, most commonly to the lungs.

6. Based on the medical history, tongue cancer invading the floor of the mouth can be distinguished from mouth floor cancer invading the tongue.
