Does thyroid cancer require surgery

Does thyroid cancer require surgery

Thyroid cancer does not require surgical treatment, and specific problems need to be analyzed specifically. If it is early-stage thyroid cancer, there is no distant metastasis, and the tumor is relatively small, surgery can be temporarily avoided, and drug treatment can be carried out under the guidance of a doctor. If it is mid-to-late stage thyroid cancer, surgical treatment is generally required, because early-stage thyroid cancer may metastasize through lymph nodes, blood, etc., and the possibility of distant metastasis is small. When mid-to-late stage thyroid cancer has distant metastasis, surgical treatment may not be possible.

1. Early thyroid cancer: Thyroid cancer is a common thyroid malignancy, and its pathological types include papillary carcinoma, follicular carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, medullary carcinoma, etc. There are generally no obvious clinical symptoms in the early stages of thyroid cancer. A lump may be felt in the thyroid gland, or a lump may be found in the thyroid gland during a B-ultrasound examination. Since thyroid cancer develops relatively slowly and most cases do not metastasize in the early stages, early thyroid cancer generally does not require surgical treatment;

2. Advanced thyroid cancer: If thyroid cancer has distant metastasis, such as lung metastasis, liver metastasis, bone metastasis, etc., surgical treatment can be performed at this time. Because the tumor is relatively large at this time and cannot be completely removed, the tumor must be removed before the lymph nodes are cleared;

3. Advanced thyroid cancer: For example, when metastasis occurs to the esophagus or trachea, and symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and breathing occur, the tumor cannot be removed surgically. Instead, it should be treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other methods.

After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, relevant examinations should be completed to clarify the tumor stage. If surgical treatment is possible, surgical resection should be performed as soon as possible. Because the chance of distant metastasis of thyroid cancer is relatively small, and the cure rate is relatively high. Generally speaking, the earlier the treatment, the less impact on the body, so treatment should be started as soon as possible.
