How long does it take to recover after half-resection of thyroid cancer

After hemisection of thyroid cancer, the length of recovery time is usually related to the surgical method, such as total resection, subtotal resection, subtotal resection, and laparoscopic surgery. Different methods have different effects on postoperative recovery time, which requires specific analysis of specific circumstances.

1. Total resection: Total resection refers to the complete removal of the trachea, esophagus and recurrent laryngeal nerve in the neck. Since the operation requires lymph node clearance and endotracheal intubation after the trachea is removed, it will have a certain impact on the patient's breathing and swallowing functions. It usually takes 2 months to recover from total resection of thyroid cancer.

2. Subtotal resection: Subtotal resection refers to the removal of the original thyroid gland and the sixth group of lymph nodes. Since the scope of the operation is relatively small and the number of lymph nodes removed is relatively small, the surgical incision is small and the recovery time is fast. Most patients can recover 2 months after the operation.

3. Subtotal resection: Subtotal resection refers to the removal of the fifth group of lymph nodes in addition to the original thyroid gland. Since the scope of the operation is relatively large and the number of lymph nodes removed is large, the surgical incision will also be relatively large, which will have a greater impact on the patient's breathing and swallowing functions. The recovery time for this type of patient is relatively long and may take 3 months;

4. Laparoscopic surgery: Laparoscopic hemisection of thyroid cancer is to make an incision in the neck to remove the part where the thyroid tumor is located. Compared with total resection and subtotal resection, the wound is smaller and the recovery time is faster. However, due to the large scope of the operation, complications may occur after the operation, such as hoarseness, coughing when drinking water, etc., which require targeted treatment. It usually takes 3 months to recover.

Patients are advised to have their thyroid function checked regularly at the hospital after thyroid cancer surgery to determine whether there is any thyroid hormone deficiency after surgery. At the same time, they should pay attention to the healing of the surgical incision and whether the drainage tube is unobstructed after surgery to avoid infection.
