I don’t know if you have ever had a tetanus shot. The tetanus shot is an injection given to a small number of people after they are injured. It mainly contains some horse serum, which can effectively resist the tetanus bacteria produced in the body. However, not everyone needs a tetanus shot after being injured. Only those who are injured by rusty nails or other iron products need a tetanus shot. For those who are not particularly familiar with tetanus shots, let’s learn about their functions. What does a tetanus shot do? How much do you know about tetanus? In daily life, have you done a detailed checkup for tetanus? Do you know what the tetanus shot does? Let us learn about it together. Tetanus is a specific infection caused by Clostridium tetani invading human wounds. Tetanus bacteria grow and multiply in an anaerobic environment, producing exotoxin. The general incubation period of tetanus is 6 to 12 days. Some patients may develop the disease 1 to 2 days after the injury. The mortality rate after the attack is as high as over 20%. If active and passive immunization measures are taken, immune protection can be obtained as long as the tetanus antibody content in the body's serum reaches 0.01-0.1IU/ml. The tetanus shot, also known as the tetanus antitoxin injection, is used to prevent tetanus. Skin scratches and wounds require the injection. A tetanus skin test is a skin test performed with tetanus antitoxin. It is derived from horse plasma immunized with tetanus antitoxin, which is made by enzyme digestion and salting out. Suitable for patients with open trauma, 1500-3000 IU per subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. The dosage for children is the same as that for adults. For patients with severe injuries, the dosage can be increased by 1-2 times. If the risk of tetanus infection has not been eliminated after 5 to 6 days, the injection should be repeated. If the skin test is allergic, tetanus immune globulin can be considered for direct intramuscular injection without skin testing. Tetanus immune globulin is made from the plasma of healthy people who have been immunized with hepatitis B vaccine and then adsorbed with tetanus vaccine, and the virus is extracted and inactivated. Human tetanus immunoglobulin is an artificial passive immunization. It produces an immune effect immediately after injection, but the duration is short. The immunity period is 2 weeks and generally does not exceed 3 weeks. There are generally no adverse reactions after injection. Suggestions: It should usually be given within 24 hours. If you are allergic, you can consider intramuscular injection of tetanus immunoglobulin 250 units. |
