What are the etiology and characteristics of glioma

Glioma is the most common tumor in the brain, accounting for about 46% of intracranial tumors. Malignant gliomas grow fast and have a short course. Most cases develop within 3 months from the onset of symptoms to the time of medical treatment, and 70% to 80% develop within half a year. So, for such a serious brain tumor disease, what are the etiology characteristics of glioma?

Characteristics of glioma:

1. Glioma cells have the ability to escape immunity, making it difficult for the body to naturally produce specific killer cells and antibodies against them, thus effectively circumventing the inhibition and clearance of the human immune system;

2. The pathophysiological type of each glioma patient is often very different. Glioma of the same type and grade also have obvious differences. Modern neuroscience can predict the growth rate, invasiveness, and sensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy of the tumor by testing the specific protein or gene expression of the tumor through methods such as immunohistochemistry.

3. Most cases grow and recur in situ, while a few metastasize or spread within the skull or central nervous system (brain, spinal cord), and few cases metastasize outside the central nervous system.

4. Malignant gliomas grow rapidly, and the cell cycle of active cells is often only a few days. That is to say, 100,000 active glioma cells today will become 200,000 in a few days. Therefore, even after surgery and chemotherapy, the average survival period of glioblastomas with the highest degree of malignancy is only one year, and many only a few months.

5. Visual impairment includes decreased vision, hemianopsia, blindness, diplopia and decreased vision.

6. Most glioma patients will experience symptoms such as increased intracranial pressure, such as headache, nausea and vomiting, and papilledema.
