About the harm of glioma

Speaking of glioma, some people may not know what kind of disease it is. Glioma is a tumor that occurs in the neuroectoderm, so it is also called neuroectodermal tumor or neuroepithelial tumor. Suffering from glioma will cause great torture to the patient's body and mind. So, what are the hazards of glioma?

1. Tumor bleeding

Patients with a small amount of bleeding may have no symptoms or very mild symptoms. Patients with a large amount of bleeding may show symptoms of high intracranial pressure, hemiplegia, aphasia, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness, brain herniation, or even sudden death.

2. Limb paralysis

Most cases are hemiplegia. The incidence is higher in cases where the tumor is located near the motor area of the brain, the basal ganglia, or the ventral side of the brainstem. It starts as mild paralysis, which gradually develops into severe paralysis and even complete paralysis. Hemiplegia may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as symptoms of high intracranial pressure.

3. Mental disorders

It can be caused by progressive increase in intracranial pressure, or it can be the result of compression and destruction of the brain substance by tumors. In the early stage, the symptoms are generally mild, manifested as apathy, dullness, memory and comprehension impairment, etc. As intracranial pressure continues to increase, mental symptoms become more obvious, such as dementia, confusion, personality and behavior changes, etc.

4. Cause epilepsy

The incidence rate accounts for about 30% of brain tumors, and the cause is mostly due to direct stimulation or compression of the tumor. The seizure type is often localized, but can also be a major seizure. The seizure is related to the location and nature of the tumor. For example, tumors in the motor area and its vicinity have a higher incidence of epilepsy. Glioma, astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma have a higher incidence rate.

5. Causes blindness

There are not many people who go blind suddenly due to brain tumors. Often, vision loss occurs first. If it is not treated promptly and effectively, it will gradually develop into blindness. Some children, and even a few adult patients, ignore the vision loss on one side, and the doctor finds that one eye is already blind during the examination. Some patients, especially the elderly, have eye diseases when brain tumors occur. When vision changes, they mistakenly think it is an eye disease, delay treatment, and develop into blindness.
