Is the mortality rate of osteosarcoma high?

Osteosarcoma, also known as osteosarcoma, is a common malignant bone tumor that occurs in adolescents or children under the age of 20. It is the most common bone malignant tumor in children, accounting for about 5% of pediatric tumors. So is the mortality rate of osteosarcoma high? Let's learn about it together.

According to foreign literature reports, the incidence of osteosarcoma in blacks, Hispanics, and whites is 6.8, 6.5, and 4.6 per million people per year, respectively, which means that about 5 to 6 people per million people will develop the disease each year. Among malignant tumors in children, the incidence of osteosarcoma ranks eighth. Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant tumor in the orthopedics department, accounting for 44% of all primary malignant tumors in the orthopedics department. Therefore, the incidence of osteosarcoma is relatively high.

Osteosarcoma is a highly malignant tumor. Before the 1970s, the mortality rate of the disease was over 90%, and the five-year survival rate was less than 10%. Now, after continuous efforts and research by bone tumor specialists, with active and correct treatment, the five-year survival rate of patients is about 70%.

Osteosarcoma is still a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate in children and adolescents, but early detection and timely treatment have greatly improved the survival rate of the disease. Radical surgery should be performed to treat osteosarcoma. If conditions permit, local wide resection can be performed to preserve the limb. In addition, a biopsy should be performed before amputation.

After osteosarcoma is diagnosed by pathology, early chemotherapy or radiotherapy begins. Resection of tumor tissue is an important step in the treatment of osteosarcoma. With the improvement of tumor surgical technology and the development of implant research, limb preservation therapy has shown a good treatment prospect. Consolidation chemotherapy or radiotherapy after tumor tissue resection is very important for controlling tumor metastasis and improving survival rate.
