What are the surgical resection methods for kidney cancer

Li Qiang is an oncologist. He is best at diagnosing and treating kidney cancer. During his many years of medical career, he is often asked various questions about diseases by patients and their families. Many of them are about surgical resection of kidney cancer. Some patients worry whether nephrectomy will remove the entire kidney, while some patients worry whether surgery can completely remove the tumor. Li Qiang will give patient answers to these questions.

According to Dr. Li, different resection methods can be used depending on the patient's condition, and these different resection methods are the most effective way to resolve patients' concerns.

Radical resection

Radical resection can be performed for patients with early-stage renal cancer, which means removing the entire kidney, including the adrenal gland and the fatty tissue around the kidney, to ensure that the tumor is completely removed, thus obtaining a chance of recovery. However, the patient can only rely on one kidney to complete renal metabolism.

Partial nephrectomy

Partial nephrectomy is performed for patients with smaller lesions, with an internationally recognized tumor diameter of less than 4 cm. Only the liver tissue containing the tumor needs to be removed, while the remaining tissue is retained. The retained kidney can still maintain a certain metabolic function.

Laparoscopic nephrectomy

The main consideration for this type of resection is that it causes less damage to the patient, such as a small wound, less pain and bleeding, the patient can quickly resume eating, and can be discharged from the hospital earlier. Therefore, for those patients who are afraid of surgery and have poor physical conditions, this method may be used.
