What are the symptoms of bone tumors?

Bone and joint pain, bone masses, and functional impairment are considered to be the three main symptoms of bone tumors, especially malignant bone tumors. Let's take a look at the relevant introduction to the symptoms of bone tumors.

1. Lumps: Generally, lumps appear locally in bones and bone joints. Slow-growing tumors or tumor-like lesions rarely have obvious swelling and are not discovered until functional impairment or pathological fracture occurs. Benign tumors often appear as solid lumps without tenderness; while rapidly growing malignant tumors grow faster and have diffuse swelling. The lumps are adhered to adjacent tissues, have poor mobility, are hard in texture, and have unclear boundaries (which is the opposite of benign bone tumors). The surface of the tumor is uneven and tender. This is one of the symptoms of bone tumors.

2. Pain: In the case of minor trauma or no trauma, obvious pain occurs in the bone joints, especially at night, with a tendency to progressively worsen. Painkillers are ineffective. This is also a symptom of bone tumors. In the case of excluding acute and chronic inflammation, the possibility of early tumors should be suspected. Pain is the most significant symptom of rapidly growing tumors. Pain does not necessarily mean that the tumor is malignant. Some benign tumors, such as osteoid osteoma, can cause pain due to the growth of the reaction bone. Sudden and severe onset of pain is likely to be a pathological fracture.

3. Functional impairment and compression symptoms: If the tumor is close to the joints, the movement function will be limited, and it will be painful when moving, and there will be swelling and tenderness. Tumors occurring in the spine, whether benign or malignant, can compress the spinal cord and cause paralysis.

In addition, symptoms of bone tumors may also show signs of skin and local blood vessels: if the tumor has abundant blood vessels, the skin color may change significantly, the skin may become hot, and the superficial veins may become swollen. Some bone tumors have more specific locations.
