Lung cancer has become another major killer of women

Lung cancer has become another major killer of women

Lung cancer was a rare disease among women in the early 2000s because smoking was uncommon among women. Breast cancer is still the most common cancer among women, but lung cancer has been the number one killer since 1987. Why does lung cancer have such a big impact on women?

The death rate from lung cancer in women has increased sixfold since 1950. It has been found that some women may be more vulnerable to the effects of "second-hand smoke".

The study found that female lung tumor patients, like their male counterparts, may have a damaged gene that is often fatal and can promote the growth of genetically damaged tissue in the lungs containing tobacco smoke. The final gene building in damaged tissue can lead to uncontrolled tumor growth.

This research work can be regarded as an important contribution to understanding why lung cancer has become the leading cause of cancer death in women.

Lung cancer patients were found to have K-ras gene mutations in the early stages of the disease, which may be undamaged genes after the patient's death. Two out of ten female patients were caused by men with damaged K-ras genes. In its intact state, the gene tells lung cells to divide and proliferate. Damaged K-ras genes are present in 10% of all lung tumors. People with lung tumor genes without mutations: 70% of patients survive for more than five years.

Therefore, quitting smoking is not only a protection for oneself, but also a responsibility to others. In order to prevent women from being invaded by lung cancer, I hope that men will quit smoking from now on, so that we can live in a healthy environment.
