What are the symptoms of a broken nose

A broken nose is a symptom caused by violent impact. A fractured nose bridge has a great impact on patients. If not treated in time, it is likely to cause various complications in patients. Of course, nasal bone fracture can be manifested through certain symptoms. Below, we will introduce to you the symptoms, treatment methods, and prevention and care methods of nose bridge fracture!

1. Symptoms and Signs

After a nose injury, deformities such as a crooked or collapsed nose bridge will immediately appear. A few hours later, the nose and surrounding soft tissues and eyelids will swell and become congested. At this time, the external nasal deformity is not obvious. When the swelling subsides, the deformity will reappear. In the event of a comminuted fracture, air can enter the subcutaneous tissue of the nose, eyelids, and cheeks through the damaged nasal mucosa and lacrimal apparatus, causing subcutaneous emphysema, which is especially exacerbated when blowing the nose. Because it is often accompanied by tearing of the nasal mucosa, nose bleeding occurs. In patients with severe injuries, clear water or light red bloody fluid may flow from the nose, indicating damage to the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, tearing of the meninges, and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. Nasal obstruction may occur due to blood clots or foreign objects blocking the nasal cavity, swelling of the nasal mucosa, or displacement and protrusion of the nasal septum cartilage and bone. If damage to the nose and frontal area affects the olfactory nerve, there may be olfactory impairment.

2. Treatment Methods

It is best to make an early diagnosis of nasal bone fractures and receive timely treatment within 2 to 3 hours after injury before local soft tissue swelling occurs. If there is obvious local swelling and congestion that cannot be examined and treated, although you can wait for the swelling to subside, you should try to reduce the fracture within 7 to 10 days after injury. If it has been more than 2 weeks, local callus and scar formation, and dislocation healing has occurred, will make reduction difficult.

The treatment goal of nasal bone fracture is to restore the external nose shape and restore the ventilation function of the nasal cavity. For simple fractures without displacement, the appearance of the nose does not change and reduction is not necessary. The patient can be advised to protect the nose and avoid pressure, and furazolidone ephedrine nasal drops can be used. People with subcutaneous emphysema are prohibited from blowing their noses, and those with cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea generally do not need nasal packing.

3. Preventive Care

The preventive measures for this disease mainly include the following measures:

1. Take a rest and avoid blowing the wind directly on your head.

2. If you wear glasses, please take them off temporarily.

3. Because nasal breathing is not smooth, people often use mouth breathing, so it is better to keep the air fresh and moist.

4. If you have cough or allergic rhinitis, try to control coughing and sneezing.

5. In terms of diet, in the early stage of fracture, due to severe swelling and pain, fever and loss of appetite, you should not eat too much and the dishes should not be greasy. In the later stage, the swelling and pain have gradually eased and the appetite has gradually returned to normal. You can strengthen nutrition to promote healing.
